Quaint little hotel, restaurant and bar in Laleston. Booked a table for two and having only driven past previously, the car park was easily found and had plenty of spaces. Walking into the main entrance, we were greeted by a friendly bar tender who led us to our table through the bar area, snug and finally the restaurant area - a mini tour of the low beam, cozy space that was dark yet pleasant. The bar tender brought drinks to our table and by this time, we were ready to order food. The bar tender frequented the dining area regularly, ensuring guests were adequately "watered". There were tables that could accommodate larger crowds, as well as smaller setups in a room that led onto the kitchen. Our waitress brought us freshly baked, seeded bread with butter. When asked if it contained sunflower seeds, she looked worried and we confirmed an allergy that wasn't anaphylactic! She promptly asked the kitchen staff and advised us that it did contain sunflower seeds and although no alternative was offered, all of the bread was eaten with no side effects! It was delicious. Shortly followed by chorizo and cheese bites (x2), also scrumptious. The starters - scallops and prosciutto in a pea soup; every element of the dish complemented one another. The meaty, crispy prosciutto added crunch to the fresh and fleshy scallops that were seared to perfection. The peas in fluid was soon mopped up! Second starter: ham hock terrine accompanied by pea puree, shoelace onion fries and some other mango coloured sauce - delightful to the taste buds, an elegant starter and brilliant presentation. On to the mains, we both had the Welsh beef fillet steak, served with mushrooms, chunky skin-on chips, a picked shallot and peppercorn sauce. We asked for one to be cooked rare, the other medium rare. Both came out to be cooked almost the same and the rare was slightly overdone but nonetheless still extremely succulent and tender. The dish was marvellously presented, with the chips in a wire basket and sauce in a jug. The only downside to this meal were the chips. The description said they were triple cooked; some were larger than others, giving that "home cooked" image, but this meant that some were wonderfully crispy whilst others had that "not so cooked" texture in the middle. The dessert menu - not on their website - could do with some revision. As a chocoholic, I was disappointed to see the most chocolatey pudding listed was a chocolate tart. We skipped dessert and made our way to the front of the house to ask for the bill. Overall, our visit was pleasant. Waiting for staff was never an issue and despite being just a little overpriced, the food impressed us. We were told that the menu changes three times a year, inkeeping with the seasons. Even though the menus were not the same as those advertised on their website, we were not disappointed with the choice of meals. We will definitely visit again and would love to introduce others to this gem of a place. Thanks to you all who made our short visit a...
Read moreWe have stayed at the Great House previously, over many years, and had only good times, and good things to say. Whether there has been a change of owner or system I don't know , but this time it was a disaster from start to finish. At times the stay bordered on the farcical.||||Firstly we were put into the "dark" room , well it was painted bible black, but had it's own laser light show !! When the ceiling lights were turned off the ceiling was essentially a mirror. When I complained , I was told the room was a bit like Marmite , not the colour, but rather you either loved it of hated it . I hated it. ||||Secondly, when I came down to breakfast the following day I was told that I was late , I arrived at 9:01 , and also that I was sat at the wrong table. So much for a "Good Morning, welcome to our breakfast room" ||||Thirdly , a week or so after our stay a friend who came to pick us up for a family function received a "Fine" from CIVIL ENFORCEMENT , as she had stayed in the car park longer that the âfree" 10 minutes !! The fine for this was ÂŁ60 which could have increased to ÂŁ100 if not paid and then to a DEBT COLLECTOR and court if still not paid - various statutes were mentioned. ||||I contacted The Great House about the last item and basically got nowhere , they told me that the car parking enforcement was a third party !! I explained that it was The Great House responsibility. ||||TGH suggested my friend should show them our invoice for the stay and state that she was âpicking up a guestâ. She did this and the âfineâ was reduced to ÂŁ20. ||||I will obviously recompense my friend and will issue a charge back on my credit card to The Great House. ||||These private parking operators / schysters need to be regulated , but the likes of TGH need to take their responsibilities seriously and not abrogate to the 3rd party.||||With all of this any good will that I had with this hotel has evaporated. We will never stay here again and would advise others to find better...
Read moreWe only booked for one night as we had just emptied our house and we where traveling on , this is basically a nIce hotel , maybe we where just unlucky , just a warning for future guests ,they have a room that is called the black room , well I can write a full page just about that, everything is black, floors, walls, curtains, lamps , even the ceiling, is black mirrored with small purple fluorescent lights , the lighting is terrible, no ways u can put any makeup on , not even in the bathroom , , I see I am not the first person to comment on this terrible decorated room , anyway , I could describe it another way , but I leave it up to the individual, we needed a shower , cold water and unfixable , we where offered another room , but I just did not have the strength anymore to pack up again , I did ask for a discount, which was given , but I am afraid the damage was done , so all and all not the best experiences, just a thought , maybe a change of the colour scheme in that horrible room would ...
