Was really excited to to visit again after finding this gem last year on a visit however tonight was extremely disappointing and uninspiring, I ordered the scallops and prawns for starters and was given 3 scallops and 4 prawns within some toast only cooked one side, I never worried too much and looked forward to the main course, I ordered the signature burger and it arrived at best Luke warm and presented looking unappealing, I did mention it was only Luke warm when asked how our meals where and was offered a free desserts that was much appreciated ( thank you ) I ordered the Honey pot with ice cream and never tasted the slightest hint of honey it was just dry bland biscuits with a lack lustre chocolate honey pot and nuts, the whole dessert was just very dry. The service was extremely slow and I don’t blame the server because the poor girl had to look after so many tables and to be fair that area needed at least 2/3 servers. I would try the venue again on the hope it was just a difficult night for them. The building inside and out is lovely and worth a visit for that alone.

Lovely food and a fine bar selection in relaxed atmosphere. Great for mid week lunch escapes as quite quiet; weekends, particularly in high season, can get busy. Plenty of parking and good views out over the channel (nice that the 'beach' is being cleared too). Outdoor seating is nice in the summer, if a touch breezy being on the coast, and there's a children's play area. Dog friendly bar dining area too; bonus points :) Fireplace isn't just for show; it's a lovely live feature in the colder months and is fabulously festive around Santa Time. Our latest visit was particularly lush; a last minute Sunday lunch booking to lead us into the madness of the season (December '24). The steak and venison pie comes highly recommend, as does the bramley apple and mince pie crumble! Bit full now though... We were looked after very nicely thank you by our host Katy, and we'll probably be back for more soon. NB. Car reg needs poking into the tablet by the door on entry, to appease the parking gods.

Been to this stunning place loads of times but now just reviewing it . One of the cosiest pub and restaurant you will find . The menu is highly varied and is changed seasonally, always top quality. The staff are very friendly and helpful. In the summer it gets packed as the views outside of sully island and the Bristol chanel are amazing . I highly recommend this place . Oh and if you have a dog bring it along. They supply water in bowls for your canine friends 👍. Another visit on 2nd of August 2023 and the same warm welcome , the clear views to sully Island and across the Bristol Channel to steepholm Island were amazing , I went for the 22 day mature steak and beef brisket burger with fries , while my girlfriend went for the pie of the day , beef in red wine pie with mash and fresh vegetables, absolute stunning, lots of pooches in the restaurant , I adore them . Put it on your to do list ❤️

We unexpectedly found this place around 22:15 on a Monday night when we were just looking for a spot to park by the sea and have a drink. The place was quiet and obviously winding down for the night, but my partner and I were totally enamoured by it! The location is fantastic with a fabulous beer garden out front, and the interior had clearly had a lot of love and thought put into it. Cosy but open feel, wonderful decor, and very clean.

Even though the coffee machine had already been turned off and cleaned for the night, the staff behind the bar were kind enough to start the machine back up just for us to have one coffee, which was super nice as we hadn't expected them to. They could have easily told us it was just off for the night, but went out of their way, and that demonstrates customer experience as a key focusing point at The Captains Wife. Unfortunately I can't say much more, as we were only here for one drink late at night, but it made such an impression that we're both absolutely eager to return during daylight hours if and when we're next in the area!

Edit: We returned for a proper visit 8 months later and unfortunately I have had to take a couple stars off, not due to my experience, but my partner's.

The starters were very small for the prices. Tasty, but small, and ÂŁ10.50 is an insane price to pay for the prawn and scallop one. The menu specified king prawns, but what you got was three small ones like what you'd get in a value freezer pack at Iceland. My lasagne was absolutely gorgeous - one of the best I've ever had, if not THE best. However, my partner's burger was barely warm and topped with the saddest excuse for an onion ring I have ever seen. Floppy and impotent. Clearly the chef had done their job, but the food died in the window. Very disappointing considering how much we had looked forward to eating here. My Banoffee pie wasn't the nicest I ever had, but still lovely. My partner had asked the waitress about the Honeypot dessert, and she raved about it - absolutely bigging it up to make it sound like this revolutionary, decadent artisan dessert. In reality, it was not only very small, but the chocolate the pot was made of wasn't any good. There was no honey to be tasted whatsoever. The whole thing was overall very dry and disappointing. Not even worth half the price they're charging for it.

The service was also quite slow, not because the staff are bad at their jobs, but because there were not enough of them. Very frustrating.

I would like to give this place another go sometime, but boy howdy is it a mixed bag. You don't know whether what you're ordering is going to be stunning, mid or just outright awful. Still worth going on a warm sunny day to enjoy a drink in the beer garden,...

Disgraceful Experience – Poor Service, Tiny Portions, and Utter Disrespect

We visited this restaurant as a group of 8 – 4 adults and 4 children – and left feeling completely disrespected, hungry, and frankly, robbed.

We had a table booked for 12:30pm and placed our order well before 1pm. Starters took over an hour to arrive, and mains came out nearly 1 hour 30 minutes later. Despite expressing our concern – especially for the hungry children – we were met with dismissiveness. Our waitress simply said, “It’s OK,” and then added, “There are 100 people waiting,” as if that excused the complete lack of organisation.

Eventually, the children were served before the adults, but even then the vegetarian meals took even longer. Sides arrived before mains, cutlery had to be requested repeatedly, and we even had to clear our own table to make space. The whole experience was chaotic and unprofessional — especially shocking considering we booked in advance and staff knew it was a group of eight.

And for what? We paid nearly £200 for kids’ meals, basic mains, and shared starters — with portion sizes so small we left hungry. Drinks were limited to 2 Guinness, 3 ginger beers, and 3 lemonades. For this price, it was outrageous. We genuinely felt robbed.

When we tried to raise our concerns, the chef/manager came over, not to apologise, but with attitude, saying, “You can leave your review.” So here it is.

As proud Indian Sikhs, this experience cut deeper. Our community has long contributed to this country — including serving in the British World Wars. We work hard, we support society, and yet in this moment, we felt like second-class citizens. We have never felt this way before at this restaurant — which leads us to believe it’s under new management, because the service, quality, and respect we once received is gone.

We travelled from London to enjoy a special meet-up with friends — instead, our Saturday was ruined. There was no apology, no gesture of goodwill, and no basic courtesy.

We will never return, and we sincerely hope this review reaches the owners and senior management. The current state of this restaurant...

The evening started where we were met by a waitress who immediately told us what we could not have. This is a regular visit for our family on Christmas eve and it did not set a good tone for the evening. Our other experiences have all been excellent I have to say. After providing us with drinks, our order was taken. Still a bit disappointed we waited for our starters. This took the whole of an hour to arrive, and we were not visited by the waitress at all during this time to apologise or explain the delay. The starters were OK, but not to the usual high standard. What then followed was another long wait, only then to be served food that was completely over cooked and inedible. We soldiered on, but in the end we left a lot of the food, feeling quite embarrassed that we left so much. Eventually the waitress came back, after some length of time to ask us how our meals were. By then as you would appreciate, we had finished what we were going to eat. My wife explained our dissatisfaction only to be asked, what else would we like, ie another meal. Of course we did not feel like this. I would have expected an apology and perhaps a visit from the manager, to explain our situation. That did not happen, and no further contact was provided by the waitress. We therefore paid our bill and left thoroughly dissatisfied with our customer experience, with me trying to stop my wife publishing her feelings on social media. I can assure you we have not done this. I have to say as a resident of sully we have been really supportive of the establishment and recommended it highly. However, this experience has left us wanting and reconsidering our patronage. In terms of improvement, hopefully I have given you food for thought in my review. Please...
