I was told before visiting the UK that I needed to go to a pub. Did pubs in Cambridge, Oxford, London. Touristy areas as well as off the beaten path. I didn't get the hype. By random chance I booked a night at The Cock (I know). I get it now.
Food was traditional and perfectly executed. Beef Cheeks with melt in your mouth brisket and a wonderfully plated sticky toffee pudding (it's a crime I didn't take a pic) that was as good as it looked. Beer and food were reasonably priced.
Then there was the atmosphere. I struggle socializing with strangers. Steve and Melissa had that covered. They provided the perfect environment for a village pub that is welcoming to newcomers yet provides a sense of community. By the end of the night I was drinking with friends.
As for the room it was lovely. Cute decor, kettle and accessories for tea, and a comfy bed. Enough space you don't feel cramped.
This was my first time in Wales. I'll be back and I'll be staying at The Cock. If I could give it 100 stars out of...
Read moreStayed last minute having been badly let down by another hotel at LD3 0AA. (please, never stay there!) The hosts at The Cock Hotel could not have been kinder. I had a funeral to go to the next day so I need to be well-rested. You would think that being over a pub would be noisy. It was in full swing when I arrived. I had driven a long way so I wanted a nice walk first which was lovely. When I got back, I had the best night's sleep in ages. There was a lovely hot bath, soap, beautiful decor, perfectly white towels, a window you could actually open, tea and coffee, a hairdryer, a heater if you needed it, (which I did not) a lovely wardrobe with two drawers and lots of hangers. Extra pillows and blankets, should you be in need. Someone nice has thought of everything. Thank you so much you fab people. You made my trip to Hay-on-Wye as good as it possibly could be without the Hay-on-Wye...
Read moreA great stay! There are two large comfortable rooms both with full size ensuite bathrooms. The rooms were well appointed, large comfortable beds, very clean with nice touches such as toiletries, plenty of tea/coffee/milk. We received a very warm welcome on arrival and instantly felt comfortable. Definitely book a table in the restaurant (it is deservedly popular). The locally sourced, home cooked food was delicious! Keep some room for dessert by the way. They're fabulous too! There was no noise at night so a good night's sleep was had. Breakfast isn't provided but the clearly laid out guest information will signpost you to some excellent nearby breakfast options. We chose the Honey Cafe a minute's drive away, where we had a great breakfast. It's worth looking for a reason to return to this welcoming and...
