Could not have been less friendly if they tried. Avoid at all costs. They don't want you there, and you don't want to be there.
We stayed in this lovely area over a long weekend. Unfortunately the extremely well-reviewed Freemason's Arms had suffered a small fire and so couldn't do food or most draught drinks, which the friendly landlord explained before recommending other pubs. We should have taken note of him NOT mentioning this establishment, even though it was just across the road.
We are a well-presented family of 5, with no children. On entering The Ship Aground, our smiles and greetings weren't returned by the landlord. The one patron, a local, made a beer recommendation.
My mother enjoys the admittedly unusual Guinness shandy; the landlord's response was "not a chance". Perhaps he only had the individual pint Guinness device? Nope, on tap. Easily could've serviced the request, just didn't want to. He begrudgingly poured a half of Guinness , a half of lemonade, and handed us a pint glass (along with the rest of our order). Once we sat down and combined them, a few drops inevitably hit the table. This was greeted with a resigned, just-within-earshot "well that's gone everywhere" from the landlord. If only such a tragedy could have been prevented! If only there were some readily-available pouring devices built into the bar YOU'RE STOOD BEHIND.
Also, our request for cheese and onion crisps was considered outlandish, and outside of their varied stocks of ready salted, ready salted, and ready salted.
The atmosphere throughout was ice-cold, with the landlord clearly annoyed by any conversation, his attention fixed on the TV (golf). Needless to say, we did not stay for a second.
If open, The Freemason's Arms would be a far, far...
Read moreRang the pub in advance and spoke to the landlord to check out if open and ok to come in etc. On entering the pub he was leaning on the end of the bar and welcomed my family with a scowl. As we moved to a seat his only words were to the effect 'you can't sit there'. Very unwelcoming, and corresponds to the many other poor reviews of this pub. We turned on our heels and left. The good thing is that the present owners (from 1988) are selling up, so if you have a spare £325,000 to buy the place go for it, because there must be loads of untapped potential. He certainly lost about £60 of our...
Read moreVery friendly traditional pub, used by locals but welcoming all. There’s a cosy bar area, room with tables at the back and a small garden at the rear. Food is available between 5 and 7 with a limited menu, but cheap and good. Recommend, but don’t come if you’re expecting fine dining! This is a good, honest simple place with a cheerful welcome from staff and...
