This review is in relation to the restaurant only.

We had the fish cake entree and the lasagne and steak mains and all round were disappointed. The fish cakes were quite wide, heavy and dry although they did come with a nice salad garnish and sauce, the steak was undercooked for a medium rare (more on the rare side) and had quite an odd taste (almost like it was about to go off) and similarly the lasagne used very cheap mince that had an odd smell and did not have any taste or flavour all round. Everything we ate required a lot of sauce and salt to mask the flavours and make them edible. Unfortunately this is the only dining place in the area so there is little choice and everything is sold as being ā€œhome madeā€ which is an odd statement for a restaurant generally as everything would be expected to be made in the restaurant, however, the real question is how freshly has everything been made and what is the quality of the ingredients. On the price side, it is not overly expensive, but is not cheap either. The service was super nice and friendly and very attentive, we did not raise these issues at the time as we didn’t want to make things awkward, however, the meals were not a good experience. So overall rate the restaurant 2 out of 5 (hence the star rating).

On the hotel side, we had a great experience and the rooms were really nice, very clean and had everything we needed - would rate the accomodation 4 out of 5 and if just looking for accomodation I would definitely recommend, the soap smelled...

Expensive, poor quality food. Had to send back 2 dishes. Manager lied to my face about the black burnt particles covering the chips. "Its the nature of the oil." Also the fish pie was ice cold in the middle. Straight out of the freezer obviously. Awful, avoid.

Wow, the lying continues in your response. For your information the locals in my party said they would not be coming back. Where does this L2 in food hygiene come from? Never mentioned L2. Black particles covering fried food comes from burnt particles in the oil they are fried in, nowwhere else, unless they are sprinkled on afterwards. I did become agitated because you failed to acknowledge my complaint and repeatedly said the back particles where from "the nature of the oil". At no point did the rest of my party declare the chips to be beautiful, another lie. I suggest you think about how to better handle customer complaints, and change/filter the oil in your deep fat fryer...

Arrived on Saturday 8th August for four nights and the hosts were most welcoming and very accommodating. Breakfast on the first two mornings was excellent although the hosts interest in my son and I seemed to wane as our stay progressed. We are not needy guests and went out and about everyday. We did not eat dinner at the hotel as the pub was shut on the Sunday and Monday evening. The breakfast was mediocre on the last two mornings and on our last morning our portion was lacking. We even had to ask for more toast. The host was quite affronted that I mentioned the reduction in the quantity of toast and when we actually asked for more it seemed to take ages to arrive. A great place to stay for a one nighter although not sure the hosts are geared up for longer durations. A disappointing end to a very lovely break. On asking to pay and subsequently settling the Bill the host could not even be bothered to ask if we had had...

Stayed here for a night before taking past in the Fan Dance Race. Arrived to a warm welcome by Tom, who got us checked in & quickly showed us to our room, despite having a busy bar to contend with. Room No.2 was modern with a comfy double bed and offered a lovely view over the hills. Geared dumped & it was down to the bar to sample some of the local real ales & the fantastic scran in the bar. Both the Pie of the Week and the Fish & Chips were brilliant! Big portions ensure even the most hearty appetite was fulfilled. Update July 2019 Back down for another Fan Dance so to the chance to visit again. Despite being under new management, the welcome was as friendly as before and the food was as tasty as our previous visit. The Usk Double Burger was simply amazing. Proper butchers meat, full of flavour & the curry my wife had was great, even the aromas made my mouth water!

After a long journey from Liverpool we arrived late and were in search of some food. Originally we were headed for another place (recommended by our host) but after finding it was closed we found the Usk & Railway and what a find this was! As soon as we entered we were met with a really friendly, warm welcome. There was plenty to choose from on the menu and specials board, including a few veggie options too. We were told all the food is homemade and when it arrived we were impressed - it was a good portion size and really tasty! We would happily recommend a visit here.

2 nights B&B with our dog in a standard double ensuite room. The room was very spacious, the bed super comfortable and everything was very clean. It faced the quieter of the two roads that border this pub and we had no issue with noise (windows shut as end of November) possibly different in summer. We had to pay £10 per night extra for our dog but this seems common place these days. The owners were friendly and the food in the pub & the breakfasts were very tasty all in all a very pleasant few days exploring the Brecon Beacons.
