Probably caught them on a really bad day, expected way better from the reviews.
Being a Monday, this was the only place open for dinner in Princetown. I called multiple times to book a table expecting it to be busy but nobody answered.
We finally walked in and were initially told they have no space because they're expecting two tour buses. We found a table out at the back and soon there were many tables available there despite the tour bus crowd.
Ordered a fish and chips, which seemed like it had been waiting on the counter a while before being served.
And the Hunter's Chicken was an abomination, it shouldn't be called food. It was dry, undercooked, tough, fibrous and tasteless. We sent it back, waited twenty minutes expecting better but got the same. Disgusting and extremely disappointing over our hungry patience.
The beer was good, but where is it ever bad anyway.
Felt very unwelcome.
The indignant language and gaslighting in the pub's reply is surprising. I could also say amongst us we've been to likely over a thousand pubs and restaurants around the world and never had to send anything back to kitchen, but that's not the point. Sure, you served a lot of customers and nobody else had a problem. We still did, it doesn't diminish our experience and our perspective, same us what we felt doesn't diminish the hard work the staff was doing under challenging circumstances. Four of us with very different taste buds tried that chicken twice and we all found it tasted like chalk and had the texture and toughness of half baked...
Read moreWe were a group of four who had reserved a table on a Sunday. Parking nearby but payment required. Access to the pub was easy and it was rammed. Lovely choice of very local beers. The problem was the food, or more precisely, perhaps our food choice. Our group of four composed two meat eaters and two veggies. I chose the Hunters Chicken with cheese and a specially made blue cheese sauce.( I am allergic to onion). This was fine. My fellow meat eater chose the beef roast which looked as if it had been sitting on the pass for too long. The veggies chose crostini and a wild mushroom risotto. The crostini was served as slices of French bread with a tomato paste squirted across the top and the risotto was a grey soggy mould-shaped lump of rice tasting of starch . Both the veggie choices were returned and not billed. The roast was half eaten. To be fair, it was an extremely busy lunch session. To maintain standards, and the chef's reputation, the food menu should have been shortened to a choice of roasts only ( and do the job properly) and/or a very limited " other" choices. Staff were very good considering the working pressure. The pub had a cosy atmosphere but it will not be a first choice venue for me if food is part of the equation. I am an ex Restaurant...
Read moreWe stayed here at the start of our south-to-north Dartmoor hike — a 30-mile adventure over two days — and the location couldn’t have been better. Right on the moor, it’s the ideal launch point for anyone tackling a big walk across this beautiful, rugged part of the country.
The accommodation was exactly what we’d hoped for: clean, comfortable, no frills, just what you want from a mid- to low-range pub stay. Perfect for hikers or those stopping over on a budget.
What really made our stay memorable, though, were the staff. From the moment we arrived, they were welcoming, full of good humour, and genuinely eager to help. We needed an early start for our first day of walking, and they kindly put together a packed lunch for us in place of breakfast, a small gesture that really went above and beyond.
We did have breakfast on our return stay at the end of the hike, and it was a lovely surprise, high quality, tasty, and clearly using good local ingredients. The sausages in particular were a highlight!
We’d happily stay again. A brilliant pub base for anyone planning to...
