The Chequers — Restaurant in West Oxfordshire

Sadly we arrived at 210 after being recommended by crocodiles of the world. By time we got into the bar with our disabled party it was 217 and we were turned away. However, i had been waiting at the bar while someone was on the phone booking in another customer and there was nobody else to be seen (apart from a member of male staff who walked past me into kitchen and did not reappear again!). Lady politely said they were no longer serving food though did go check (thank you). However, very disappointed that something wasnt offered - even a sandwich! We would have settled for anything like that! As we were not local and had no idea where else to go. We did not realise it shut (for food) at 215 (though it was on back of flyer we picked up at the crocodile place we realised afterwards) and so had to leave. A real shame. The next pub we went to The White Hart also had shut down food however the waitress there phoned another pub down the road who she thought would at least be able to offer some food (as she couldnt either). She phoned, checked and booked us a table and then gave us perfect directions. We subsequently went on to have a lovely sandwich and chips at the Old Swan in Old Minster. Which was lovely. A real shame. The one star is not directed at the lady who turned us away but rather at the other staff who just disappeared. All you had to do was say you were not serving anymore and I would have asked for a recommendation and moved on. Instead i was left waiting until it was past 215 so you could legitimately turn me away. If you serve until 215 then serve till 215. Not disappear and leave it to another person to turn us away once the clock has ticked to 217. You could have offered a sandwich or something! Thats not fair on the lady who did that (embarrassing for her too) or us. All in all not impressed and...

We came in for mothers day meal

Glasses was absolutely disgusting asked for clean ones got new ones but again the glasses were disgusting was advised sorry we are running out of glasses

The lady with the blonde hair dressed in black Our party of 4 all felt the coldness and bad attudie. I also watched her untill we left she was very blunt and really seem like she had a bad chip.in her shoulder

The stuffing was absolutely rock hard

I found it totally unacceptable to be told highchair is behind them just get it out This should of been done prior to arrival or done for us while we sat down but blunty to be told do it ourselves.

Again absolutely poor poor service Only 1 baffled staff actually smiled. This isn't hospitality or delivering excellent service The pudding (trfile) was a wash out The jelly wasn't set correctly The Custard was tasteless and the fruit was a very weird mix for normal trifle.

Having eaten here 4 years ago I expected much better, but this place has really gone downhill. All the soft dinks on draught were flat, and none of the staff were able to resolve the issue. Only alternatives were cans of diet coke or rio for £2 each. Food took 45 minutes to come out and we were the only people in there, and was served to adults before children! None of the burgers looked very appetising, but they were big portions. The slow cooked beef cheeks however were a tiny portion for £20, and the meat was overcooked, served with a spoonful of mash and some undercooked veg. When given the final bill we thought it was too much, but the lady insisted it was correct (the receipt was not itemised, but she wrote down the prices of items for me). Once home I looked in more detail and found they had charged us for an extra meal! I did get an apology on the phone, and told to come back to get the money back, which I did. The lady who gave the refund, however, gave no apology at all for us having been overcharged. I would not go back...
