The ladies behind the counter are the true stars of this establishment. I was greeted with a pleasant smile and a warm British "What would you like, dear?" – something straight out of a Hollywood movie, but genuine rather than rehearsed. This simple courtesy, increasingly rare in 2025, was immediately followed by a helpful explanation of the menu and included sides when she noticed my dumbfounded expression and American accent.
We visited early in the day when the food was fresh and visually appealing. My beef stew and dumpling was the highlight – tender, fall-apart beef in a rich brown gravy that paired perfectly with the side of mashed potatoes. The roasted root vegetables were cooked just right – well-done without being mushy. The dumpling was a pleasant surprise, it was herb flavor, and it was flakey. I particularly appreciated that nothing was overly salted.
The drink selection, while adequate, was somewhat limited. The pastries were nothing special compared to the hot food offerings, which were consistently tasty, hot, and delicious.
