Went here for breakfast based on a recommendation. Have to say I'm confused how Gils has had so many good reviews. We had two veggie full English breakfasts after being told it was falafel and halloumi. Not worth the money. No halloumi as originally told. Falafels were dry, mushrooms boiled in water and all served on cold plates. Food became cold very quickly along with the 2 pieces of toast that were served on the same plate. Take off the toast and all you were left with is a small portion of beans, egg, 3 small falafels, avocado (which i hate) and a hash brown. Not exactly a full English. Toast had hardly seen the toaster which probably accounts for why it was so cold. My son in law had chicken and bacon salad. He too was unimpressed as there was no dressing. Waited 30 minutes before anyone came to take our order but it was busy. Perhaps that accounts for poor quality food.

Post comment in response to owners response.

I was well aware you were busy and I acknowledged that. There were certainly no strawberries or blueberries on the vegetarian breakfast either. And why would I ask for halloumi when your staff told me there was halloumi with the veggie breakfast. Neither was there any dressing on the salad. AND finally the reason I didn't complain at the time was because I had been told by someone else that you had anger issues. Judging by your response...

Recently found this gem. I can’t believe I didn’t know about it until I went on my nieces Facebook as I don’t have FB. The malteser cheesecake and shortbread are amazing. I’ve been looking for cafes with homemade cakes and these truly are homemade, which is such a rarity! The staff also make the latte to preference such as decaf/ oat milk etc the indoor area is clean with tasteful decor. The outside seating is really lovely as it’s based in a pretty and peaceful location. There is a free car park that can be used. Owner is lovely and friendly. We felt very welcome. I was a bit worried as I’ve been to other places which are a bit hostile towards Muslims/ Asians but there was no need to be worried here. I haven’t tried the food yet but when I do I will edit my review . I’d love to see more cheesecake flavours as Gil is a great baker . I am a baker too and I have very high standards so that’s saying something . Im definitely not easily pleased when it comes to cakes. Overall really lovely cafe . I went to another cafe before I discovered Gils for homemade cakes and that was such a major disappointment in quality and taste and did not compare to Gils. Prices are really good for the cake considering it’s homemade and generous portions . Only wish I could visit more often but due to health problems I can’t but when I do it’s a lovely...

I love coming to Gils and have had lots of yummy food there with friends and family over the years. Lovely afternoon tea, toasted sandwiches and cake! Today when I visited with a friend who is fairly new to the area they were quite disappointed with their food and service we received. My veggie breakfast was lovely, nice fresh avocado, strawberries, blueberries, mushrooms. My friend however sausages on Full English Breakfast were cold, they said not cooked. One younger female member of staff wasn't very welcoming or friendly when we arrived and my friend had to ask for the sugar for their coffee. The same member of staff seemed to be really miserable and didn't ask if everything OK with meals like you usually do.

Was a shame as I know it's a great place, fantastic setting and all the hardwork that has gone into business by Gil. Not sure if today was but more of a wait on food and the normal attentive service as there was a larger group in back room.

I will definitely return again in the future, just shame that my friend who visited for the first time today won't return again as was disappointed and put off by...

The perfect afternoon tea Our group of 11 came to Gils for afternoon tea for my friend's hen do. I rang 4-5 weeks ahead of time to ask if they would be able to accommodate a large group of us for a hen do and they were very obliging. The whole process was a breeze, just needed to confirm numbers and pre order our food the week before. I was given a detailed description of what the afternoon tea included and allergies were catered for well. Our booking was for 11am, but we were able to come at 10am to assemble our balloon arch and decorate our table. We were also able to bring some of our own Prosecco (as it was a special occasion) with no additional charge. The food was incredible (scones, sandwiches, cakes etc) and the staff friendly and helpful. We also weren't felt rushed to vacate our table despite it being a Saturday. Thank you so much Gil's for making the day so special for everyone, especially the bride to be!
