Updated 1/4/25: Went back to the Underground tonight for a Saturday night bite to eat. Had a great supper. Had the spicy pimento cheese appetizer, and entrees of shrimp&grits and salisbury steak with collards, mashed potatos and mushrolm gravy. All was really good. The crowd seemed a bit off. All the other restuarants in Abbeville were packed tonight. Only had one issue, and it's nit-picky I know. But the spicy pimento cheese was really good, but it came with only 4 capt wafer crackers. We had to ask for extras cause there was way more pimento cheese than 4 crackers could hold. Waiter brought us 8 or 10 more wafers/crackers which was plenty, but when we paid the bill there was an$0.50 charge for the extras! Not thrilled with that. Either give me adequate to start with or add $0.25 to your original price and hide it! But really that's ridiculous!!! Sorry - had to call it out!!!! Also - patrons, be aware that this is another business that adds a "plastic tax." This one 4% for using a credit card.
Original Review: Out riding around on a Friday night looking for a new restuarant to try. We found the Indigenous Underground on Trinity St in Abbeville. A down to earth, southern, cook from scratch restuarant. Had an interesting dish for an appetizer - the black-eyed pea gumbo. It was really good - a bit spicy with a touch of after-taste, but really good for something different and new for us. My wife had the fettuccine alfredo with chicken. Modestly priced, but to add the chicken was a $5 charge. The dish had an abundance of chicken and pasta with a great taste. The pasta didn't have a creamy sauce as we are accustomed to but a tasty, watery liquid that it was cooked it. It wasn't bad, just different. I had the shrimp & grits. Really good. A nice amount of shrimp, plus the grits were stone-ground with goat cheese added. We arrived around 630pm and the restuarant wasn't too crowded but there was a large party of about 10-12 people that had the kitchen busy, causing our plates to take a bit longer than what one would expect, but our waitress (CC), kept us informed. She apologized and gave us a discount for our wait as well as a slice of cake for dessert. Now let me tell about how wonderful the cake was!!!! We had the strawberry layer cake. It was absolutely mouth watering. The best cake we've had in a long time. The cake was really moist - like the strawberry juice had been poured on the cake. Good but not too sweet. Our waitress said that they sourced the cake locally as they do for most, if not all of their items. Thank you for a great meal and an enjoyable evening. If you haven't tried the IG, you really need to! ...
ย ย ย Read moreThe gathering around the table is such a wonderful moment of connecting with friends and family. It is not just a meal, it is an experience. Unfortunately, I struggle with food allergies and it is a very rare occurrence for me to get to enjoy dining out with friends. Indigenous underground came reccomend by a fellow Abbeville restaurant owner who swore up and down that the chef/owner could be trusted to prepare a wonderful meal for me without cross- contamination. I went ahead and booked our Board of Directors lunch at the restaurant and I am beyond impressed. I called ahead and they made certain that they had adequate seating and staff to serve our group. I felt like I was watching children at Christmas time as my board of directors searched through the menu to try the creative soul cuisine. Fellow restaurant patrons even started making recommendations on what we had to try! Before today we never heard of green tomato jam but now we need more of it in our lives! When the food came out it was warm and presented well. My favorite moment was when my guests started trying to split their plates with their neighbors so that they could sample it all! The staff was attentive, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect! The most amazing part for me is that I was able to enjoy a lunch out with friends and feel included without the fear of getting sick from my food (remember I have allergies). I am glad to say that I have found a place that I can trust to provide me and my guests with a great...
ย ย ย Read moreHard time saying which was better, food or service. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door. Not just the rehearsed impersonal greeting, but a warm welcome. I felt like they were happy I was there. When I started eating I was happy I was there also. I had the Soul Rolls and Shrimp and Grits. The Soul Rolls were great, but I had came for the S&G. Shrimp and Grits are my favorite dish, and I try to find them everywhere I go. They absolutely nailed it. They add goat cheese. Never had it that way, and it did not disappoint. The food would make you feel as if it belongs in a tablecloth, maรฎtre d' ryoe establishment. But it ain't. It's friendly, laid back and comfortable. The atmosphere fits in with the name. They had music playing at the perfect volume to notice it if you wanted to, or listen to your table mates with ease if you wanted to. The price was good for the amount and quality of food you get. When I got there almost every table was full, yet my tea glass never got empty. Which would be the case most places I go to. Especially considering I had been working in this heat and was pretty thirsty. All in all, I give it 5 stars, and I will be back. Hope to bring the...
