First time visit. It was on 12/28/23, around noon, it was quite busy, but not full. The food was flavorful, once it arrived at our table. The hot beef plate was very salty, and the breaded shrooms were burnt, extremely crispy. It took a considerable amount of time for our food to arrive, there were five of us. We understood this wait, as all food is prepared after ordering, which is wonderful. However, the wait time still seemed to be extensive. Upon leaving we felt instead of being upfront with prices, we were nickeled and dimed to death. *The Smothered Chicken plate was to come with one extra side, we asked which side come with it, and were told where the sides are listed. That's great, however ordering from that list, we were charged $2.00 for the side. *We were asked if we wanted a dressing for the French fries & breaded shrooms. Waitress suggested "ranch' so we said "sure". We were charged $.50 for each of those two dressings. *We were never brought additional water to the table and were charged for a glass of water. Every restaurant we've ever dined in has given water with the meal. We've never been charged for water when food is ordered. Being charged for water was a total surprise. These are just a few examples of why we felt we were nickeled and dimed. The total surprise was about $3.70 which is no big deal, however, we'd rather have that reflected in the overall menu prices rather than be a surprise when checking out. We are from the southeast part of the US, when the restaurants upcharge such as this, the waitress is to tell the table. The building is very cute, they have found very clever ways for extra storage such as antique chest. Overall, they seemed a little stretched for staff. Maybe like everywhere else in the country, good staff are extremely hard to find. We would definitely return, as overall the food was good. We are hoping they will review their current policy of adding to the final bill and stop...
Read moreGood food, nice place, lots of seating options, including a gathering place for a larger group.
Chicken fried steak was very tender and delicious. White gravy very good. Potatoes a little too whipped, not a fan of brown gravy next to the white gravy, Green beans canned, warm ciabatta dinner roll very nice.
Western omelette tasty, a little more scrambled than omelette, so good he didn’t mind. Good hash browns assorted toppings available.
Good cheap coffee endless pot. $3.50 for two cups. So far best breakfast in Algona.
Highly recommend.
Second visit. The owner won’t let you swap a vegetable side for a cup of soup, which is also listed as a side. If your lunch plate has a listed vegetable, generally canned green beans, vs. a nice little cup of homemade soup. Forget it. Our waitress was great she got me broccoli instead of canned green beans. Broccoli was let’s say a notch above raw, it was a great addition to his Southwest salad.
They have some good looking cinnamon rolls, but the staff drop the check with no mention of a sweet...
Read moreVisited this quaint ,family owned restaurant for their Sunday Breakfast Buffet. I'm visiting Iowa for 1st time. We were seated immediately, drink orders taken and picking up yummy scrambled eggs. Biscuits n gravy. And YUMMY french toast cut into dunking stix. Drinks were refilled in timely manner, and of course with a smile! I have to admit; I got full before I could try the cinnamon rolls that I could smell from time we walked in... So I took one with me. Oh my! It looked innocent enough, but the decadent icing on the yeast rolled with the most delicious cinnamon mix. I'm sure when you have one at restaurant, the slight warmth makes them even better!! Oh..I forgot to mention the Vanilla Sky. Snicker Doodle, and Red Velvet specialty coffee drinks we had..they were great, and they are available all the time, so come for food. Stay for lovely coffee drinks, and...
