Who knew you had to go to West Texas to get the BEST breakfast potatoes you’ll ever taste?
Yep… V6 Coffee has that kind of reputation and we’re so glad we got to experience it. You can too! Today’s post is a talking-head moment from our conversation with Samuel from The Gage Resort & Spa, and we ended up bonding over breakfast potatoes. The kind that stop you mid-bite. The kind you talk about long after the road trip is over. The kind that quietly become part of your “you have to try this when you go” list. Marathon may be peaceful, quirky, mysterious, and inviting — but it also knows how to deliver a seriously good breakfast. And V6 Coffee is at the heart of that. This is all part of our Big Bend Series, inspired by Jennifer Broome’s spot-on recommendation to visit Big Bend in winter. And she was right — the food, the weather, the people… it all hits just right. Hear more in Episode 272, where we dive deeper into Marathon, The Gage, and all the delicious surprises waiting for you. 🎧 Streaming now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or at podcast.theroamies.com

This photo is half of my $13 turkey Ruben from v6. After eating the first half of the turkey Ruben I thought boy, sure didn’t taste any turkey. So I peel the second uneaten half of it to reveal that little sliver of whatever the heck that is. I actually had to take a moment to realize that was the turkey on the sandwich. Like I get brickvault is expensive so maybe get a new supplier. But that amount of turkey on a turkey Ruben is no less than embarrassing and a lot more of something else. It’s quite shameful. Slapping a bunch of jarred kraut and dumping dressing on it doesn’t do anything for it. It’s so bad, how that leaves the kitchen is beyond me.

Ordered a cortado, Mexican mocha latte, and the green chile chorizo skillet. The cortado wasn’t traditional, but I greatly enjoyed it nonetheless. The cinnamon in the mocha was just perfect. The skillet was good, not quite the “green chile” experience I was expecting (there was only a hint of green chile flavor), but thoroughly enjoyable. I ordered the corn tortillas, but the flour tortillas my brother ordered looked even better.

While their coffee was REALLY GOOD, everything else was kinda meh. For the price you pay for, the breakfast was okay tasting, but the amount of food they give you sucked. I ordered a side of potatoes and they literally gave me just three pieces of potato wedges. For bacon, only got two pieces when most places give three. The eggs looked like just one was given, not two, etc. The employees seemed alright and nice (except one who seemed to talk to us differently than he did the WASP customers), but we didn't like how little service was given, like we still had to get up and get our food, etc. I don't understand places that ask for tips yet don't actually do anything to deserve it. The place was cool, I guess, but nothing to brag about. This place just seemed more hyped up than it deserved. Also, my fiance and I felt uncomfortable, we were the only Hispanic/Latinx people there, besides one of the employees. Everyone that came through as customers were WASPs. As someone who works with diversity and inclusion at my job, this is no bueno. This may have to do with pricing or atmosphere, there was not one Black American or Hispanic/Latinx person that walked through the door, and we were there for about an hour just hanging out and maybe 15-20ish groups of customers came through (they were really busy). This place obviously does not cater to other ethnic groups, it appeals to only WASPs which is really discouraging and adds to our experiences of microaggressions and...

We stopped here early Sunday morning. It was very busy. We ordered 2 large lattes (cinnamon honey and Mexican mocha), a small coffee and a medium hot chocolate. As everyone's drinks were ready the young lady making the drinks, was placing them on the counter, was calling out the order name and what the beverage was. Our small coffee was ready first, after a few more minutes the 2 large drinks were placed on the counter and my name was called out but she never said what drink was what, as I approached the counter I noticed they weren't labeled either, so I asked the lady which coffee was which, she looked at me annoyed and said "just open them". I was at a loss of words and could not believe the attitude she had. We waited a few more minutes and my daughter's medium hot chocolate never came. I approached the cashier and brought it to her attention, she didn't even acknowledge me and walked directly to the lady who was making the drinks and told her we were missing the hot chocolate, the lady making the drinks turns around annoyed and says "I already made it but I guess I'll make it again." At that point I decided to walk outside and it wasn't until we were already on the road that I realized she gave me the hot chocolate instead of my latte. The visit was so disappointing, if you dislike your job that much, do...

Really disappointing experience after a lovely stop at the Gage Hotel to stretch our legs after visiting Big Bend. My friends and I visited this bar about 25 minutes til closure and ordered several drinks. One friend who ordered did not receive her drink after several others did who had ordered after her. Eventually, she asked about a drink that was sitting up on the bar, inquiring if it was hers, and one of the baristas said that it was. She took it and was walking over and had raised it to her lips when another barista yelled that it was his coffee and for her to give it back. They had indeed forgotten her coffee and turned everything off in preparation to close and so she got a gross, barely lukewarm chai on this cold breezy day at full charge. Shortly after that, we were summarily shooed out of the building (literally “We gotta close so Shoo, get out!”) pretty rudely by the same barista who had the brilliant idea to put his own personal coffee up on the bar at a coffee shop. This may be about a specific employee, and that’s all, but it reflected poorly on this establishment and the town of Marathon in general. Looking forward to a future visit to the Gage Hotel, but I’ll pack my Keurig and a...
