Sal's OIP is another Altoona exclusive restaurant, and Sal and his wife are legends in their own right. They've been running this business for over 25 years, and offer a hearty pizza with a chewy, fresh baked bread type of crust. There are other italian style sides like subs, strombolis, and spaghetti dinners, but sometimes a plain old pepperoni pizza is best. It usually closes for a month or so during the summer when they go on vacation, and it's dinner only (opens at 4pm).

This has always been my favorite authentic Italian pizza spot! The sauce is so specially made with a dash of sweetness! The owner is amazing, too! It's a whole vibe!!! β™₯οΈπŸ•πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ•β™₯️

If reviewing this alone on the pizza it would receive a 4.5 because the pizza was delicious. But our take-out order included a Chicken Salad with ranch dressing. In 2017, I was under the impression you no longer needed to order dressing on the side. I was wrong, and never asked if it came on the side. The Chicken Salad looked like a entire bottle of ranch dressing had been poured on top of it and was basically inedible. If you get a salad order the dressing on the side so they don't ruin your $10 take out salad. Staff is a little gruff appears over stressed when they have a few...

We ordered a pizza with half mushroom, half cheese and a cheese steak. The pizza was flavorless, completely void of any seasoning and the mushrooms were obviously canned. It was tough to bite through and chew and I couldn't even make it through one slice. It honestly tasted like the pizza was made earlier in the day and reheated. I'm disappointed in the lack of quality but it was cheap, so I guess I got what I paid for. At least my husband enjoyed his sub. The other slices of pizza are going in the trash, where they belong. I wouldn't even feed that...

My husband and I have been going to Sal's for over a decade. Of all of the "Italian" Mom and Pop shops in Altoona, this is by far the most authentic and best tasting. The prices are reasonable, portions are huge and he remembers faces. Menu highlights? Lasagna, stromboli, breaded mushrooms and subs. My only complaint is that they are cash only, but that is a small "price" to pay for quality food and excellent service. You can call in huge orders and still have them available...
