I've stopped here a few times, now. I never reviewed it after past visits because the tacos are good (great for the broad location) but not extraordinary. Which, you know, it's kind of hard to do basic tacos in a memorable way.
But I got the shrimp burrito on my most recent visit, and it really stood out as awesome Latin American fare. Some of the rice was a bit coarse, but that wasn't enough to bring down the overall experience. The slaw, salsas, shrimps, guac, etc all just came together in an awesome way. It's a very good burrito for anywhere, let alone the Midwest.
The cost was 12 or 13 dollars which might seem slightly high, but the burrito was huge. I didn't study it, but it felt a fair bit larger than a Chipotle burrito and seafood is always going to run you a bit more. Which, btw, I didn't pay super close attention to the contents as I was planning a review, but it felt like it contained a reasonable quantity of shrimp. Certainly not overflowing but also definitely not skimpy. I wouldn't change much about the ratios; it wasn't one of those burritos that had way too much rice or lettuce or whatever other bland cheap ingredient.
Shout out to the guy taking my order who worked through the language barrier effectively and graciously. Also shout out to the habanero onions they offer. They're sitting out in little plastic containers, and you should grab a couple unless you're averse to spiciness.
As for the environment, it's a taco truck in a suburban gas station parking lot. But it's pretty solid as far as such sites go. There were barstools at the truck's clean metal counter and a couple clean picnic tables to eat at. Cash only which isn't my favorite, but it...
Read moreGreat spot. I’ve been eating here for years now. Very straight forward menu and most things are great. The al pastor, as expected, is great and the other “go to” items like chicken and pork are all very very good. I’ve never had the lingua or other things like that but i expect them Tovar’s be great. Prices are VERY reasonable and the size of the tacos are very traditional and fair. ONE “complaint”, I wouldn’t order the birria. As a self appointed expert on tacos, the birria “tacos” are sub par and the consume lacked a lot of flavor and the tacos themselves were soggy and generally terrible. On the flip side, on a sandwich or torta it might be pretty good but personally I’m avoiding it all together for the real stars of the menu. I also wish they would bring back the tent for the table because it’s hot as...
Read moreMy daughter and I went here for dinner tonight and it was fantastic. They had set up a couple of picnic tables outside of their taco truck we sat there with our dog and had a great time. Customer service was fabulous, they were super friendly and informative. My daughter had a pork and cheese quesadilla and I had soft tacos. They also gave me a little cup of cheese for our dog. We also had glass bottle Coca-Cola. They had a good selection of sodas along with an authentic menu. Prices were great It was very affordable and well worth every penny. If you live close there's no excuse for not stopping by and if you live a little bit of a drive it would be...
