We made our first visit to Henry James BBQ and it's in an older part of town. It's an older restaurant so keep that in mind in regards to the atmosphere. The service is decent. There is no table service. It is counter service only. The food we came on a Tuesday night and evidently they only do the barbecue ribs. I want to say Thursday, Friday Saturday but we were not anywhere close so had to reconfigure what we were going to get as there was no way to prepare for this. I did get the chopped barbecue and one of the other members of our group got slice barbecue. The slice barbecue is better than the chopped. I'll say that right now. The coleslaw is very finely chopped, so it has an interesting texture and not received well by everyone who tried it at the table, but there were a few that did like it. So it's one of those things that is kind of a personal textural preference. We did of course have the corn dogs and fries for the small ones. The green beans not bad if they were canned beans then they did a good job of covering the can taste. The sweet potato fries are spot on and are the star of the show! We did have dessert. We tried: strawberry cobbler not received well. Too much like a jam and too sweet, we did get it with an ice cream which is interesting and it did look more homemade or very old fashioned vanilla ice cream and it was tasty. The peach cobbler was really good and there was a lot of it and the ice cream with the peach cobbler paired very well. We did try the banana pudding which was putting with chopped up nilla wafers and whipped cream. There were no actual bananas in the banana pudding that we had and it was okay... The other big star was the Oreo chocolate delight. Everybody liked it and that is the big winner! I would like to go back again to try their barbecue ribs. It seems like it's very popular and Henry James has a long history in Asheboro so I'm very interested in coming back and trying maybe some of the other sides that they have and the ribs. Would not do the desserts again with the exception of the Oreo chocolate delight. Oh I forgot. They do have refills on the sodas and the coffee and tea so that's...
Read moreHard to beat a eastern style BBQ. This BBQ is fine chopped and very moist! HJ serves a few options for you to choose from. You can get a plate or tray and even sliced or chopped. The plate I believe includes all. It includes the BBQ; hushpuppies; fries; and slaw. The tray is minus the hushpuppies I believe. I may have that wrong. But the hushpuppies are worth buying the plate! These are the best hushpuppies ever and I believe may be House Autry with onions!!!!! The sauces are simple...............a hot vinegar base and a sweet form. Neither of which are any way a tomato base thick sauce. They are like water but very good. Now to one of my most favorite items at HJ, the half BBQ chicken you can only get on Fridays! This will make your tongue slap your brains from salivating! They have other items and truly to me one of the best burgers and hot dogs around town. So if you have little ones that like a hot dog over BBQ here you go! Now to my one and only complaint...............they do not offer a combo BBQ sandwich meal nor a hamburger/cheeseburger meal. You have to a-la-carte it and then you are the price of a plate of food. They should really bundle a deal like a BBQ sandwich; FF; and a drink for like $5.25 and they would more than likely sell more than they could imagine. Same with burgers and hot dogs.......maybe even do a two hot dog; FF; and drink for like $5.00 as well. Hope they read this and maybe institute something of this nature. So overall, this is a great off the main path eating joint...

Staff were really friendly and it's an old fashioned joint. Food was decent, nothing to really write home about, but definitely pretty unique. The slaw wasn't quite my cup of tea, but the pork (which is primarily what every main course appears to consist of) was tasty, but far from the best I've ever had (that title goes to Texas BBQ favorite "Sideways BBQ" in Rockwall, TX).
I also may have tarnished my own experience by ordering it Coarse Chopped, since I didn't realize that meant "minced pork", so that really gave my a little bit of a dog food style experience in term of texture. 🤦🏻♂️
Either way, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either, just right in the middle of the road, or "mid" as Gen Xer's might say. 👴🏼
The hush puppies are slammin' though! Definitely get some of those if you're here, and maybe try their BBQ Beef ribs, those looked...
