My wife and I love Indian food. We order from many restaurants in Humble and outer Atascocita all the time, but today we stumbled on Curry and Grill near the lake in Atascocita. I at first was taken aback, as the restaurant was inside of a Shell gas station. Wait, what? Yes. Read on. My wife reminded me that when driving through Scotland and the UK, all the Tesco stations (think Buc-ee’s UK) had full kitchen restraunts built into the gas stations; many were curry houses… “in fo’ a quick curry” was apparently a common phrase. So, once I got over the whole Indian restaurant in a gas station concept, we went to the counter and discovered a full service menu, one that rivals all the other local Indian restaurants, especially those trying to be fine dining. The counter staff was very polite, patient, and professional, and we could see the kitchen staff working behind the scenes. We placed our order… tandoori fish, chicken Tikka masala, vegetable samosas, a chicken and spinach dish, and three types of naan, plus a strawberry drink and a masala chai, served hot. We grabbed cups from the counter to use at the fountain drink wall and our other drinks, and sat at a table for two looking out through the glass at customers filling at the gas pumps. We were seated next to the auto repair aisle, with tire pressure gauges, leak stop, and antifreeze within reach. The staff brought out our food in a large to go bag with large paper plates and utensils. We were encouraged to eat there, but we could have just as easily gone home to eat. We decided to stay and enjoyed the people watching, as people came in to order food, gas, or just to hang out. The food was awesome! And hot! Fresh! The samosas tasted heavenly… light flakey pastry, and the filling was fully cooked with a pleasantly spicy texture. The fish… I didn’t realize I had ordered fish, but my wife explained simple Hindi to me that I did indeed order fish. I don’t normally like boney fish, but since I ordered it, I proceeded to nibble on this tandoori fish, and it was wonderful! I ate a whole side, in fact. The spinach chicken dish? I poured some of that into a basmati rice dish that came with the meal, and it was very tasty… the first time I ever had this dish. The chicken was flavorful and the spinach spicy. The roti had wonderful flavor. We packed away what we didn’t eat in the conveniently-provided to-go containers for dinner later today. Before we could leave, the staff presented us with a free dessert, those round donuts in syrup… I can never remember what they are called. After that, we filled our truck up with gas and headed home. Looking back, this was a fun experience eating at a hole-in-the-wall-esq restaurant with a fine dining menu and kitchen to boot! Whether you DoorDash, pick up, or eat in, you will love the food, and you may even find your dining in experience as kitsch as we found it. Enjoy, and...
Read moreI am new to the Houston area and have been in search of a delicious authentic Indian restaurant - and I may have just found the best one, in a gas station! What?! I feel like I've stumbled upon a hidden gem, and I can't wait to tell my friends to try it!
I went simple for my first time here and ordered their butter chicken curry and butter Naan. The rice is fluffy and the curry made my whole car smell out of this world good, I wanted to pull over and eat it immediately, but I waited til I was home!!
My only critique is that my curry was broken (oil had separated from the curry into a layer at the top) which was a little disappointing, I spent the first thirty seconds scooping the oil off the top before digging in. That could've happened there or during the drive home, I can't say for sure, but it happens with a lot of curries I've had. Once I was able to start getting into it, it was pure deliciousness, lots of great authentic flavor with very comfortable spice for beginners. 5 stars, definitely coming back here again - and next time I'm going to see how much spicier they...
Read moreOrdered Palak Paneer, its description was most similar to Saag Paneer. The Palak is less creamy than saag, it was very bright and full of flavor, the paneer had a good texture. Also, ordered Goat Korma, my usual is lamb Korma. This had significantly more turmeric than the lamb korma than I’m used to also less creamy/yogurt it was also vibrant with flavor the goat had a good mild taste. While both dishes were different than others we’ve tried they were very good and we will order again. Probably the biggest disappointment was the majority of goat meat pieces were bone. Also some small shark bones in the sauce. I also wish the Korma had not separated/grainy sauce and also could have included more cardamom and cashew even a raisin or two would have been good. 1 more thing on the online ordering I didn’t see the option to select spicy level so both of these dishes were a bit milder than we typically order, next Tim I might add spicy selection in remarks. Still plan on...
