First off I love love love going to a place that has history and this is one of them. I spoke with Holly a third-generation family member. Bates City BBQ has been around for 41 years! That in and of itself says a lot. So regardless of what the reviews say it's obvious they're doing something right. I came in on a Tuesday night around 5. There are no daily specials. I ordered the pork sandwich and asked what is the side that I should get. Holly had said that the fries are homemade cut and that's what they're famous for. So fries it is. Pork sandwich and fries $8. I thought that was very reasonable and great portion size. I provided a picture. They have a Bates City BBQ sauce that I thought was very good (a little sweet and tangy)they only provide one option to the sauce. I personally like a little spice to mine but some people actually thought it has a spice to it. I thought the sandwich was good I personally like the pork to be a little more Smokey and moist. The fries had a great flavor you could tell that they were real potatoes. The only thing I didn't care for was they were pre cooked and then reheated at the time of ordering which made them not as crispy as I like them and probably more greasy than they should have been. I noticed that there were a few Truckers who had did reviews on Yelp who liked the convenience of being able to drive their truck around the adjacent building. The customer service was awesome as most hometown restaurants have . I definitely want to come back and try the brisket that seems to be the more popular choice and I will also let you know how that goes. I hope this review helps. UPDATE: tried the signature ribs they were delicious and my eight year old girls cannot get enough of them. They are fall off the bone and not too much smoke. the baked beans $4 a pint we're delicious as well, they have a sweet and tangy flavor. They are roughly $7 a pound you get generally 4 ribs. I have added a picture I would definitely recommend the...

After dining here for the first time, Bates City is no longer a "drive by" town along I-70. It's a "plan your trip around stopping here for a meal" town.
It doesn't look like much from the outside or the inside BUT if you are looking for great barbeque at an affordable price, this is the place.
We had the 3 meat platter with ribs, ham, and brisket (they stated some substitutions could be made). One person had a pulled pork sandwich. All of the meats were delicious. The sauce paired well, but when I go back, I'll ask to hold the sauce. I enjoy the flavor smoked meats and like to enjoy them without the distraction of sauce, then add sauce to my liking.
We also had sides of coleslaw, beans, and an order of fries. The coleslaw had a sweet but not too sweet vinegar dressing. The beans looked like canned pork and beans (I usually like mixed beans with seasonings that result in a dark sauce color) BUT the vinegar, onions, and touch of hot pepper had me going back for more. The fries were crispy, thin cut, skin on fries and the single order was so generous, all 5 of us were about to enjoy them.
It's an order your food at the counter and pick it up at the register, then seat yourself place (or carry it out). The staff we interacted with was friendly and helpful.

Read morePeople were very nice. The set up is old style BBQ, you just grab a tray and tell them what you want. Bathrooms were clean and look nice, but they are very cramped. Some of the food was good. My fiancée got a pulled pork sandwich. It was a little dry. I got the meat sampler. The beef and pork were okay. The ribs were very good. I would recommend them. The BBQ itself was tangy so if you like sweet BBQ I would not recommend. For the sides we had baked beans, coleslaw, and French fries. My favorite were the French fries. They were fresh. They are more like the cut of a five guys fry except not as long and a little greasier. They were really good. The beans were okay. I really appreciate that they seem to have gone for a unique taste instead of just doing a generic sweet BBQ beans, but it just wasn’t a taste I enjoyed. The coleslaw is vinegar based and not sweet. If you enjoy Mayo based sweeter coleslaws I would not recommend. We also had a snicker doodle cookie. It was very good. Not quite to the homemade level, but close. And they are super big! Not a place we would probably go again, but that’s more about our tastes then their performance. If you’re a fan of tangy BBQ and fries then it’s a...
