I am a huge fan of Lanning’s. I am very honest in my reviews even at the expense of hurting egos. But, if the owners do not have feedback, how will they know if something is wrong?
As I said, I have been a patron of the restaurant for decades. Mr. Martin assumes his role and is very good at it. Mrs. Martin is a very beautiful and charming lady who compliments the couple and enhances every part of the experience.
I was the 7:30 reservation on August 23, 2025. One I make every six months under a variety of names. I actually used my correct one this time. I arrived very early and was greeted by two young ladies who were effective in the experience. The Martins were obviously not present, and I expect on a well-deserved day off. They left the front desk in good hands.
I went into the lounge and met a young couple who had just finished dinner and were relaxing with an after-dinner drink. They raved about a delightful pastrami appetizer which they swore was the best ever. An obvious regular couple came in and they were fun introducing themselves as they sat in their reserved seats at the bar.
The same bartender was in his normal rare form. As in the past, he spent his time chatting with the regulars and ignoring the remaining customers. He did make great drinks and was fun to talk to when he actually came over to take an order.
The delightful host came and escorted me to my table. The staff provided an immense amount of attention and compliments to all.
So, let’s talk about the food. I have never been disappointed in the past. This evening, I was.
The pastrami appetizer was a disappointing 4 out of 10. I wanted to try something different this time round. For my main dish, I typically order the 30-day aged ribeye. I was leaning toward the special which was the Kansas City strip steak. But, I was soon talked into ordering my usual.
Again, the attention of the staff was superb. The 26 oz ribeye came to the table. I immediately knew it was not a 26 oz. bone-in ribeye. It appeared dry and over charred and was a weak 12 ounces at best. A young lad proceeded to pour bourbon over it (which I have never had done in the past) and did not know what he was doing. I thought, I have to try it. It was horrible. The flavor, if it originally had any, was ruined by the bourbon.
Now mind you, I have never had a complaint about Lanning’s in all of my dining experience. This steak could not be consumed. The staff quickly took it away and made me the Kansas City Special strip steak. THIS SHOULD BE A REGULAR MENU ITEM. It was fantastic.
But there was another issue. I asked for and was provided three different steak knives and not one was sharp. This, too, declined the dining experience causing me to take the steak home. How can a steak house not have sharp steak knives?
So, to the Martin’s…..you have a great product. You are wonderful people. It is time for quality control. I never mind paying for a great meal, but this was a dining disaster.
Two last items of business. After all the remodeling, there still is no bathroom on the main level; And, the acoustics are bad as no one can hear themselves talk. This needs to be remedied. This is the sole reason I never returned to The Cabin Club.
Added-on: I have since read other recent reviews. The Martins truly need to triage the steaks and other issues. This could be the beginning of the end if they fail to do so. I have several close friends who have always enjoyed the experience. One is a restaurant reviewer. He has been watching the reviews. One bad review is more powerful than all the good. I added this on as I do not want to see the Martins fail.
I believe they need to send out flyers apologizing to their patrons and asking them to return for a far better dining...
Read moreWe went really excited to try Lanning’s out for the first time. Some things were very good, others not. Here’s the breakdown:
The lady owner met us outside as we arrived and walked us inside where we were greeted by a male and female host. They were very cold (not because of the temperature outside either) and did not give a welcoming vibe. We were immediately sat at our table in the dining room to meet our friends. I loved the decor, the vibe and the crispness of the restaurant. The table settings were aligned with high-end restaurants, complete with wine glasses and steak knives.
Our waitress was very kind and sweet but extremely inexperienced and definitely in need of additional training. Small details were missed- 1. She asked for ice in a scotch after it was order neat, twice. 2. Did not bring ice in a bourbon that was ordered on the rocks. 3. The wine glasses were removed from our table after we ordered a bottle of wine. 4. After dinner was served one guest was without a fork for some time. 5. During dinner a bottle of wine was removed from the table and another bottle was not offered, which was wanted. The server assistant, Ellie, was unbelievable. So attentive and really saved our dining experience.
Let’s get into the food… which is what we were most excited to try! Crab cakes were definitely subpar, flat and underdone. Lobster bisque was not spectacular but served piping hot and that adds bonus points. Caesar salad was underwhelming. Bland, even with lemon squeeze and mixed up. Needs Parmesan cheese but THOSE CROUTONS!!!! Most unbelievable detail to a salad ever. Baked potato toppings were elegant addition and made my carb-loving heart very happy. My steak, 10oz filet=PERFECTION. Bone-in filet was cooked amazingly and 3/4 scallops were cooked to perfection. My biggest confusion comes with the super small (almost side or salad) plates entrees are served on. Left very little space to cut steak.
As entrees were delivered we got a half attempt of a check in by the manager/owner. Would like to have felt a little more from him, especially because we were not having an amazing experience to date. After dinner we decided to check out the bar, since we had heard many mixed reviews about it. Personally, I loved it! I like the old-school speakeasy/cigar bar vibe. The bar top was sleek, music was appropriate, and both bartenders, Eric and Dusty, were professional. We ordered another bottle of wine and collectively decided IF we ever came back, it would be bartop only to eat our dinner.
After spending almost $750 for the evening for 4 guests, we hoped to walk out with our boots knocked off!! I am glad we went to the bar, as if we hadn’t we would definitely never go back. The bartenders may have saved our return business and now we have a little more knowledge on what to order if...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I went out for our anniversary. We chose this restaurant because it had recently been named “the best steakhouse in the greater Cleveland area”. My girlfriend and I have been to many of the steakhouses throughout northeast Ohio but not this one so we decided to give it a try. Our waitress was great and we had no complaints there. The atmosphere was old school but nice. We got sat next to the window so we could see the river next to the building. The drinks were fantastic. Bread service was excellent. The stone crab special was over priced in my opinion but still, it was good. Then the steaks came. From looking at it before we cut in, we were excited. They looked amazing. I cut into my bone-in ribeye and saw what I posted. It was not medium rare like how I asked, it was basically raw. My girlfriend who ordered the filet orders medium and it was basically well done. Our waitress came over and asked how everything was. I had not had a bite because of the rawness of my steak. My girlfriend had one bite of her steak and was incredibly disappointed in how it was cooked and how dry it was. Our waitress took them both back and said they will re-cook them. The manager then comes back over with my girlfriends steak to show us the filet, saying “what was the issue with the filet”. We stated we thought it was over cooked for medium and the manager replied with “this is our medium”. While the picture is not the greatest, I will say there was a little pink in the dead center of the steak but not medium. At this point I was extremely upset that the manager would come back with the steak and try to argue with the customer. I asked if we could just pay for our appetizers and drinks and leave. The manager then said “we can warm yours up to temp and remake the filet”. I did not want that after the steak being brought back being told it was medium. The manager then said “we can only comp you for one of the steaks”. I’m not sure why that is if we did not even eat them. But I said that’s fine. I’ll take the one that was undercooked home. Overall just a terrible experience with the steaks. I have no idea how this place was voted best steakhouse in the greater Cleveland area when this is what they are serving for $65. I feel bad for our waitress because she was great and everything leading up to this...
