Captain Franks is a pulled BBQ pork sandwich place along with other beautiful dishes like ribs and things. This restaurant is extremely rare in these parts these days. It's next to impossible to find a mom-and-pop restaurant in Southern Alabama, it's been overrun with box stores. So this is one of those rare opportunities to really enjoy a good homemade BBQ. I give this place five stars, and I give it six if they had them. However Captain Frank smoked barbecue, it's really a 10 star restaurant. However the exterior looks a bit shabby and run down like an old shack. It's in Bayou La Batre which was hit severely hard by Hurricane Katrina and only half recovered. And then it was hit again by the BP oil spill. But it's good to see it recovering. If you should be traveling along I-10 and you're near Grand Bay and Bayou La Batre it's well worth the 5 mile hike out of the way to enjoy a real...
Read moreWith a 4.8 rating, we couldn’t wait to try some great Alabama ‘Q. Sadly, this place was not it. Brisket was shoe-leather tough, zero marbling, zero bark. It tasted like it needed 10 more hours of slow smoking to break down the connective tissue and infuse the meat with fatty juiciness and flavor. Neither were anywhere in the vicinity. On to the pulled pork. It should be pulled to the side of the road and left there. Dry, flavorless, cottony texture. It suffered from the lack of being cooked low and slow. The baked beans were good, the slaw was decent.
2 slices of meat came on the platter for $12 with 2 small cups of slaw and beans, appx 1/8 cup each, plus a roll. Had the meat been edible, an ok price. I’d suggest stopping at the Citgo or Chevron and opting for the fried okra and alligator hush puppies along with their excellent...
Read moreFriendly BBQ joint, we found it on our way back from exploring Dauphin Island. Stopped right before closing at around 4:45pm, ordered about 5lb of meat and finished 99% of it 😆 Very comforting. We tried full rack of ribs, brisket and pulled pork. The ribs are definitely our fav. Pulled pork is nice and moist. Brisket is a bit dry and probably needs a bit more seasoning penetration. BBQ sauce is tangy and flavorful. Take out only but there is a small area out front if you just can’t wait. Oh ya and coleslaw is delicious! Owners said they’ve been there for over 12 years! See photos for reference....
