My hubby was raised on Russ & Abbie's (La Pizza House), that was the place his parents would take him and our kiddos to for special occasions and just because they wanted great pizza. His parents and La Pizza House are long gone and he has sought out a similar pie for years since their closing. The search is finally over! Our family of 4 stopped in on a Thursday night, and this place was hopping busy. We had to wait a bit for a table to be cleared. I believe there were only 2 servers working that night and those ladies were busting their butts waiting on customers, delivering food and drink, bussing tables, greeting and seating guests. We ordered our drinks and much to our surprise, our Exile Hannah came in frosty, icy mugs. Very nice on a hot summer night. We ordered a large pepperoni and sausage pizza, extra large onion rings and I ordered a small salad with Creamy Parm. The food did take a while to come out, but understandable for how busy they were. I'm assuming they, like everywhere else is short staffed right now. Reviewers please keep that in mind when reviewing a restaurant, most places are so short staffed right now, be patient and thankful that they're even open. That gave us time to reminisce about past pizza outings with my in laws. The salad was crisp, cold and fresh, the salad dressing was creamy and yummy. The onion rings were delicious, hot, crunchy, and the onions were cooked through. The pizza was the shining star for this meal. It arrived piping hot. Thin, buttery crust. The sauce was thick, flavorful and plentiful. The toppings and cheese were abundant and delicious. Just as my hubby and kiddos remembered. I, personally, enjoyed the atmosphere the most. In one booth, there was a grandfather taking his granddaughter out for dinner after sports practice. In another, an elderly couple on date night. Another booth sat a cute young couple making googley eyes at each other over a plate of onion rings .Guests would come in, see someone they know, chat for a bit and move on to their table. Some stopped to hug the waitress. As guests left, the waitresses would say, "Thanks for stopping in" and each time the guests replied, "You guys serve the best pizza!" Just a really cozy, small town, friendly vibe here. Great date...
Read moreThis is, by far, the best pizza in Iowa. I've been coming here for many years. Until about five years ago, I was a lifelong La Pizza House customer going way back to the early seventies as a little kid, too. But, let's talk about this place. The pizza is killer! There is no other way to say it. No matter what toppings you choose, you'll get your money's worth. It's a thin pizza, with the sauce mixed in with the cheese. Now, personally, my wife and I believe that these pizzas should be a bit more thicker in the cheese and sauce part......like they were in the old Russ & Abbie days. Anyone over 35 years old knows exactly what I mean. That aside, it's still awesome. The onion rings come in four different sizes. No matter which size you choose, you'll get plenty. As someone else mentioned, the cheese sticks are great. Now, this is all I've ever eaten here. I can't speak for other items on the menu. But, I've seen the sausage sandwiches and they not only look good, but they're big! The staff is really nice. Over the years I can honestly say that I've never had any problems with anyone. BJ, I know for a fact, works his tail off to keep the place trucking along. We eat here between 2-3 times per month on average, and it's easily worth the drive from Ankeny. I've had pizza all around this Country and nobody does it better than Abbie's. Their closest competition is Leo's Pizza in Northern Kansas City (the second best pizza I've ever had - but a VERY distant second). Yeah, it's a ways away! So, I'd like to think that this place will be around for a...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I went to Abbie's for dinner, last night. It was around 7ish. It was busy. There was a line waiting to be seated, and one guy was complaining because he had already waited 20 minutes for a pizza he had called in, earlier. We only waited about 10 minutes to be seated. After we were seated it took a while before someone came to take an order. We ordered beverages the same time we ordered our meals. Not before. They don't have coffee or hot tea... The waitress was very nice, and apologized that they didn't have coffee or tea yet. I had ice tea. It was 16 degrees outside. They do serve alcoholic beverages. Our food came in a weird order. The beverages and onion rings came at the same time. A while later the medium pizza my boyfriend ordered came. His salad didn't. My cavatelli came a little bit later. He had to ask for his salad. It seemed the booth behind us was missing several salads. The pizza was good. The Cavatelli, not so much. It seemed very unorganized for a restaurant that has been open a while. The atmosphere was loud and crowded. And the air quality was bad. It was hazy in there. I think they need to clean their exhaust filters or something. Overall it was ok. The waitresses seemed to be hustling and trying to make the best of what they could. I think in the future I would rather order the pizza...
