I never write reviews but after this meal I felt compelled. I do not understand how this place has 4 stars. The bartender was the worst I have ever seen. The first words out of his mouth was, "I don't have a cook." After saying we were there to eat, he said, "I'll have to make a call." Thankfully a cook did show up somewhat quickly. Other than that the bartender said "okay" once. I didn't see him wash his hands one time. He also ate snacks while working. Still not washing his hands. When the food was ready he simply threw the plates down in front of us silently. No, "Enjoy" or even a "you're welcome" to our thank yous. After dropping the food in front of us he disappeared even though we also needed drinks and silverware. He was either in the back, bare handing rolls as I could see through the kitchen window, or talking to one person at the bar out of the 7 of us. The other 6 essentially being ignored. I don't know why he's here when it's very obvious he doesn't want to be. I don't even know his name because he never said it. He has a slight limp and a mustache. No thanks or have a nice day when we left either.
The food was inexpensive and greasy. The sandwich was okay, even though the chicken patty was half the size of the bun. They give a massive pile of fries which is nice. What isn't nice is they're not separated before being fried so they stuck together in clumps.
The atmosphere is awful. The brick walkway to the front door is so uneven I have no clue how they haven't been sued for someone snapping their legs. The smoking spot is touching the front door so the first thing you experience walking up is old cigarrete smell. As well as it being so hot that our group was sweating. Just walking by the kitchen it looked dirty. Also some of the glasses were dirty. The parking lot looks like several bombs went off in it.
Overall this is probably the worst place in the area. It didnt used to be either. I used to come here all the time years ago. I dont know what happened. I like eating at small family owned restaurants to support working families. It's clear this family does not care at all for their place....
Read moreI visited here on 21 September 2018, meeting a friend of mine as the location was roughly between her in Flanders and I in Matawan. The tavern comes up a little quickly as the driveway is slightly obscured by the surrounding hill, but this place is worth keeping an eye out. We settled in to get drinks and spent awhile catching up, with the waitress giving us plenty of time and not rushing us. I ordered the bacon cheddar burger, which was done perfectly with a lightly toasted bun and the meat and cheese tasting perfectly. My friend and I spent about another hour just catching up after eating and, again, we were given all the time we needed without any rush. The interior is designed to replicate a pub, with exposed ceiling beams, all wood floors, and a large bar. Sitting inside surrounded by the tall trees on the hill, it's easy to imagine oneself in an Irish pub....
