Ka-De-Shack — Restaurant in Brooten

Well this was an interesting visit. A friend and I were driving around rural MN taking pictures and birdwatching. Once the sun had set we were hungry and in the middle of nowhere. We decided to stop in the next town we came to and get a couple burgers or something. People were going in and out of what looked like a local bar & grill, Ka-De-Shack, so we went inside. People stared at us as we made our way to the bar. We asked if they were serving food because it appeared there was some sort of holiday event happening. A woman told us, yes, they served food, but, "they're having a chili feed back there," motioning to an extension of the bar to an event room type area. We walked back there and saw some food warmers on tables and some people talking, eating, kids around. We scanned the room looking for someone in charge, who worked there, who was taking money or welcoming people...or something. We stood unacknowledged and confused for a little while, then approached the 2nd bar and waited for an employee's attention...which took quite a while and technically didn't happen since my friend ended up asking a person standing nearby if they knew where to order food. She said, "At the bar, but we're having a chili feed here," and turned around. We went back to the bar in the first large room and sat on two stools. A server walked past us three times within the five or so minutes we waited, without acknowledging us at all Eventually my friend said,"Excuse me, are you serving food here tonight, from the kitchen?" Her response: "well yeah, but there's a chili feed back there." He then attempted to explain to her that we were hoping for burgers, but she was already too far away to hear him. We sat there for a few more minutes and she didn't speak to us again, so we left.

Maybe there was a community event happening? Maybe it was a private one and no one told us so? Either way, there were no signs anywhere and no one said anything to us except for what is recorded above. A very odd experience I must say, and I grew up in the...

Wow...is all I can say. This was likely the worst service I have ever had. 7 of us came for lunch and it was an absolute disaster. My bloody mary came in a 5 oz water glass...where did the other half to 2/3rds go. Our drink orders were all wrong and then our simple burger food order took 30-45 mins to get. 3 people got their food first, then about the time the 1st 3 finished the food came for the other 3, the other guys food was just forgotten. Most of the orders were wrong, almost all came with steak fries when we all ordered differently. The extras we asked for were forgotten. Had to ask for cocktail sauce for the shrimp. Had to go up to the bar to get drink orders because no one came to our table. And lastly we had to ask for a check 4 times, the last time we asked she said she thought she had brought it to us, which she never did and just gave me a verbal total...

Don’t waste your time here if you’re not a local. Sat at the bar for lunch and it took 15 minutes just to be recognized when it wasn’t even that busy. I finally was able to order and got the special which was a simple pork commercial. After I ordered 2 other people came to the bar and ordered right away and they also ordered the commercial and they got their food immediately. I waited a bit thinking mine would be right after. Nope. Waited a little longer and then the bartender came and asked me what I ordered again. I told her not to worry about it and left. Sad thing is I had the same service a year ago but figured it was just a fluke. Won’t...
