The Bel-Vue has always been my favorite! Our family, my friends and I have had so many great meals, drinks and celebrations at the Bel-vue over the years - for as long as I can remember. Yes, prices are increasing, prices are increasing everywhere. The Bel-Vue has been a big, fun, positive part of our lives. The year when the White American cheese on the chef salads changed to shredded mozzarella, I was worried, distraught - why mess with perfection - but decided the upcharge of $1.25 for a slice of American cheese on my salad, rather than mozzarella, was worth it. The Bel-Vue punches have never disappointed me, but they don't add the cherries to the drink anymore, not ones my friends or I have ordered. I figured it was a cost saving measure, so that's understandable, but you still can't beat the cherries in your punch. When we dine in, we are always pleased. We have a great time and are satisfied when we leave. The staff is always accommodating and kind. However, when we order take out, and we continue to do so, with the belief THIS will be the time we get our order home and it will be correct. We are all about supporting local business and realize mistakes occur in the restaurant industry. But, is the pepperslaw an ever changing recipe? Why doesn't it taste the same? Ever? Our $50 lunch/dinner today was disappointing. I always look forward to the pepperslaw. I crave it sometimes! Today, the pepperslaw has a lot of sugar and no vinegar, or very little vinegar. Our large fish and chips orders had 1/2 an order of chips. Not an exaggeration - I took pictures. When we decide to bring home some of the amazing coconut cream pie, we get to pay for it, but don't receive it the majority of the time. The staff assured us (the last time we ordered) we can get it the next time we visit. It's also suggested from statf we run back out if we want the rest of our order, but we decline as we've already made the 16 mile round trip. Today, we ordered and I asked our pie be included, as it was promised to us from our last take out order. As I've asked my husband a million times, check the order before you leave the parking lot; he did have to come back in to pick up the dessert the staff forgot, now twice. My husband's stance: the order should be checked by staff before it's handed to the customer. I agree. But, I know this doesn't happen because 3/4 of our take out orders from the Bel-vue make it home and we don't have our entire order, but you do have all the money for our entire bill. Tell me how this continues to occur? You receive all we are asked to pay, but we don't get our correct order 3/4 of the time we order take out? I apologize for the length of this review - I sometimes laugh at other reviews that are of this size. I certainly hope this is taken with the utmost of seriousness. I still like the Bel-vue. I just don't love it anymore and we don't drop the funds like we use to. I think all businesses are experiencing the same situation where they really need to identify if they can afford to lose any business due to...
Read moreMy husband had to go to Lewistown for work, and I was able to tag along. We ate here on recommendation from a local at his work. After reading reviews, we decided to give it a try. I knew going in that I wanted the breaded haddock. I ordered it with fries and a salad, with which I decided to forego my usual ranch dressing in lieu of the highly recommended house dressing. My husband got the same, but he got coleslaw instead of the salad. We also shared a slice of peanut butter pie for dessert. The place was pretty busy, but our server, Heather, did a fantastic job! Everything was brought to us in a timely manner, she checked on us throughout our meal, and was happy and cheerful. The food wasn't as fantastic as I had hoped. When my salad came, I was surprised that they actually called it a salad. It was a plate of somewhat brown iceberg lettuce, a few quarters of tomato, and some tiny croutons. That's not my definition of a salad. The dressing was the worst part. It was nothing but salty oil, it seemed. Seriously just tasted like salt. To top it off, it was placed on a dish straight from the dishwasher, which was very hot, and made the "salad" an even more limp, warm, salty mess. Not off to a great start, but I wasn't ready to write it off just yet. When our meals came, we both ate a fry or two and looked at each other. I'm not sure if it is the brand, the frying method, or what, but they were pretty awful. Definitely from a frozen bag, no flavor whatsoever, and the texture! Eww. Something was way off about the texture. They certainly weren't crispy. The outside was very chewy, and inside was a bland, mushy, potato-y like substance. Chewy and mushy. The tarter sauce was a warm, goopy mess, that may have tasted pretty good if not for the fear of eating warm mayonnaise. Thank goodness the fish was decent, at least. It had great flavor, the texture both inside and out was good, it was flaky. Overall really good. The peanut butter pie was definitely the star of the meal! I could have eaten a whole pie, I think! It was truly very good! It earned a star of it's own here, as the meal only got two. They have the stars of the meal exactly as they should be. The entrée and dessert were great! But, apparently the cost of that greatness was ignoring the other elements of the meal. Add some leafy greens, onion, grated carrot to the salad and actually make it a salad! If that house dressing is typically good, then you need to figure out who makes it correctly, and have them be the constant maker of the dressing. Making fresh cut fries would definitely be an improvement! And probably more cost effective as well. Refrigerate your tarter and for the love of all food, don't put ANY food that is supposed to be cold onto a hot dish directly from the dishwasher. The little things matter. They make the difference between a 5 star review, and a 2 star review They also go a very long way towards word of mouth...
Read moreI'm from the Philadelphia area. A colleague and I went out to State College area to pick up a used vehicle on a trailer. He and I hate fast food and were looking for some decent food to eat, before making the 3 hour trek back to the shop. I saw nothing within the State College area that piqued my interest or had decent reviews, so I chose something further down along the way. Let me state, that this took place on a Sun. THIS eatery was 1 of 2 that seemed OK, with the 2nd one only a few hundred feet farther, across the street. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food.
This establishment looks like a hole in the wall, however, don't be quick to judge a book by its cover. The place is clean and the employees were extremely inviting and hospitable. The place takes me back to the 70s or 80s, with the wooden tables (etched with names [Mark + Kathy] or statements [nothing vulgar] & random things you'd find on an old school desk), wooden floors carved and scuffed by the many years of the same tables & benches being slid to clean under them, the coat hooks attached to the benches (which most places don't use due to the lack of trust), and the timber posts throughout the old building, easily built late 1800s or early 1900s. As outdated or worn as some things looked, it was clean and kept as nice as it can be.
The food was OUTSTANDING. My friend ordered the pork chops and stated how they were the BEST he has had EVER. THAT says a lot. He was raving about them for the rest of the night and seriously wanting a way to replicate them if possible. He had fries & applesauce for the sides, also quite good. I ate something simple and basic, because I was starved. I tend to order as basic as possible when it comes to 'new to me' establishments, as a way to make it "foolproof" to mess up my order. So Grilled Cheese sandwich w/fries fit that bill. I thought it was amazing! Best I've had in a while. With 'rona, it's been a disaster to try and eat out anymore with the lack of staffing. Our server was so happy and polite. The owner(?) an older gentleman there with graying hair and bad back, who also helped the servers or hostess with clearing the tables or handing out the menus, greeting everyone as if they were old friends visiting, going around to each table checking up on the patrons. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area!
I know this is a lengthy review, and maybe irrelevant info included. I just want to add as much detail as possible and hopefully persuade those who judge a place on appearance alone, which...
