Matilda Restaurante — Restaurant in Brownsville

The food was great. Good portions and decent options.

However to be considered fine dining, this restaurant left much to be desired in terms of service. In our experience dinning at fine-dinning restaurants, I have the following observations. (For reference, we were a party of 20 celebrating a wedding).

To start off, the bar was not fully set up by the time the guest started to arrive. This left guest waiting for some time to receive their pre-dinner drinks.

Second, the coca-cola was served out of bottles that still had the manufacturer stickers on it. The drinks should've been served in glass cups to appear more aesthetic.

Third, the order taking process was taken out of order. This left the server confused as to who had already ordered and who did not.

Fourth, the appetizers were brought out at the same time as some of our entrees after taking some time from being ordered.

Fifth, the orders were wrong and given to the wrong person(s). Not only that, but they were handed off auction style. This is not on par with fine dinning. (I suggest pivot seating order taking and handoff).

Sixth, some cutlery was dirty and had to be replaced. The plating used when presenting the food was not consistent which left more people confused as to what their meals would look like when others who ordered the same thing were getting theirs.

Seventh, in fine dinning, the servers make it a point to box off unfinished meals. This did not happen at our table and we were handed to go boxes instead.

Eight, some people had already finished eating and were ready to leave before others had even received their entree.

Lastly, the meals were auctioned off in Spanish while having English only speaking guests who were not familiar with terminology in Spanish. (They were going off based on the English menu and got confused when things were being mentioned in Spanish).

It is worth noting, none of the entrees were modified in any way and none of the guests complained about all the issues outright. However, our party included people from other states and we wanted our choice of restaurant to leave them with a good impression of Brownsville in an upscale setting. Also worth noting, there was another party of (about 20) teens celebrating a birthday in the main dinning floor which could have attributed to the long wait and incorrect orders being brought out.

Overall, Matildas is good but they may need to update their service standards. I do recommend for parties of 2-4...

We celebrated my daughter’s 13th birthday here, and it was nothing short of magical. The team went above and beyond to cater to the kids, who devoured every bite, while the adults enjoyed exquisite Italian wines and delicious unique italian inspired dishes.

Matilda’s has also expanded with a stunning upstairs bar, complete with plush velvet sofas and an intimate, sophisticated vibe—perfect for a nightcap or a cozy conversation. If you’re looking to treat yourself to an extraordinary dining experience and elevate your evening, Matilda’s is a must-visit. In a town with limited options, this is where elegance and culinary artistry shine brightest. Don’t miss it!

I recently dined at Matilda’s, and I was thoroughly impressed, especially since our large party arrived late.

From the moment we stepped inside, the staff greeted us with warm smiles and promptly arranged a table for our group of thirteen. Despite the busy atmosphere, we were served drinks while waiting, which was a fantastic start to the evening.

The service throughout our meal was outstanding. Our server was attentive and genuinely eager to ensure we had a great experience. He made excellent recommendations, and our drinks arrived quickly, setting the stage for our appetizers.

The food at Matilda’s was truly exceptional. Each dish was generous in portion and beautifully presented.
