Let me start by saying that there's obviously been a change of ownership given the comments. And it wasn't for the better. There's plenty of 3 star reviews that explain how boring and bland they've become, along with overpriced. TRUST THEM. They're NOT wrong.
I lived here for a few years as a teenager, just down the road. I stopped here all the time riding my bike and then driving in as I got older. Fast forward 16 years and they're NOT the same. My food came out fast. TOO fast. Like 4 minutes from the gal walking in to her walking back out with it. My burger was hot, fresh off the grill. Great! But tasteless. My onion rings were clearly fresh out of the microwave having never been fully cooked however many hours ago. The breading still not even saturated with fry oil and still crumbly-dry.
For the nearly $20 I spent on lunch for myself, which included a burger, onion rings and a soda, I 100% don't recommend this place anymore. They just don't care. Hell, the inside isn't even as inviting as it used to be. Boxes and supplies tossed everywhere and piled high. Waiters that ask for a tip after doing 30 seconds worth of work and looking to see what you left them...
This place WAS a place my family and I would stop when we came to visit, and unfortunately, like all good things, that has come to an end. Don't waste your time or money. There's a Five Guys right down the road in...
Read moreBelow you will find a review I wrote a couple of years ago. Things have changed. Here is a review from my stop there today 5/4/2024. We got a hot dog, which was not hot but lukewarm for $5.00. A Shrimp Po'boy which 8 shrimp, a slice of tomato cut in half, a few pieces of shredded lettuce and some invisible sauce you couldn't taste on a hot dog roll, for $10.00. No way could you imagine this to be a Po'boy. 2 skimpy orders of extremely over salted onion rings at $6.00 a shot. After a bill for $30.00 the only I got was a bad taste in my mouth, an empty belly, and I was the only Po'boy. I won't get into staring into the back of a bottle redemption center sitting in a pothole filled parking lot. I also won't go back there to eat.
Below is my first review. How things change
Back in the 50's and 60's today. I was transported back to my high school days. Uniformed car hops,(waitresses). Don't get out of the car, turn your lights on for service. Service was very fast. Our burger and hot dog was cooked to perfection as were the fries and onion rings. The prices were reasonable. We listened to some 50's music on SiriusXM. The place opened in 1955 and everything is unchanged. It is authentic. If you want to see how we did in the 50's and 60's, go to Fat Boys. Remember turn your...
Read moreMy wife is from Brunswick, ME, born and raised, graduate of Brunswick High. She grew up going to Fat Boy with her family, then high school friends, hanging out. Her favorite is the Canadian bacon BLT and onion rings sometimes with a strawberry frappe. We live in Fla now, since 1986, but we go back to her home state often visiting her family and never miss our visit to Fat Boy. The food is classic dinner counter Maine fair all fairly priced and very tasty. The lobster rolls, fried clams, hamburgers, Canadian BLT, and onion rings are go-to choices. I’ve never had a bad meal there over the many years, including this month. The drive-in is a wonderful throwback in time. The car service is top notch and the hops are young kids in HS or college and as kind as can be. A few recent changes: they eliminated the quaint inside seating to expand kitchen and prep space, and the car hops show up at your car window before you know it. You don’t need to signal with your car lights anymore, except when you’re done or need something else. They also use hand-held devices to take and transmit your order and process your credit card. My advice : try your best to stop at Fat Boy during your time in Vacationland for a feel of Maine’s past and tradition and some pretty good dinner...
