I went for takeout to bring home after work. I was getting out early so it was around 3pm.
Sun has a decent parking lot, which is nice for Niagara street. Upon opening the door you are faced with a wall and a decision to go left (to restaurant) or right (to bathrooms) however there was either no sign or the smallest sign ever since I didn't see one and was unsure. I guessed left and came out to the host station.
The place looked ok and the sushi bar looked cool but nobody was there. Everyone was in the kitchen and there was no bell so I waited. It was about a 3-4 min wait before someone noticed me and came out to help. I understand it was prep time for the dinner rush but I walked in on time for when the order was said to be ready. I was also the only customer there as there was nobody inside and only one other car in the lot which I assume was a worker car.
The one worker I talked to was nice and professional. I got my food and left. I didn't get anything sushi related as I see that as in-restaurant food over takeout. It was regular Chinese-takeout quality. It was good but really expected better after reading about the owners/chef. I know this is not Chinese food (I tried Burmese and Thai) either but people need to be able to evaluate and this is the best comparison I could think of.
I will say it was my fault for ordering the paratha bread and expecting it to be good like described. It tasted fine but wasn't flaky at all but doughy. That was probably due to the car ride and condensation. The curry it came with was better cold than warm.
Overall, I would try dine-in for the sushi but the prices as a takeout place for the quality of food isn't worth it. $5 for a Thai iced tea seems steep but maybe that's what...
Read moreThe food was OK, the service was terrible. We had a 4:30pm reservation for 8 - the appetizers came at 5:45pm (1h 15m) and entrees came at 6:20pm (1h 50m)...that is, 6 out of the 8 entrees came. The other two entrees came up 25 min later and only when we asked twice about them! By that point, the table was just about done, so the two late entrees were half eaten and wrapped up. Apparently, the two entrees were given to some other table. During the entire time, our waiter asked how we were doing on drinks only once and when the food debacle happened, he just stopped coming to our table. Another waitress intervened - brought our food and apologized. We waited another 10 min after asking for the bill and when one of us talked to the owner/manager about the bad experience, the explanation was that they have a lot new employees that used to cook Chinese food which takes less time to cook than Thai food. Whaaaa...? OK - you get it. Maybe it was a one-off situation with bad service and maybe you'll have better luck, but my recommendation is - don't come hungry, because by the time your food is served, you will...
Read moreIt's normal to visit a new city and come across an ethnic spot that's highly rated by the public and find it sub-par simply because there isn't enough competition to compare against. And then another thing happens - the reviewed spot takes itself too seriously and believes everything written about it and becomes sloppy and bland.
This is what happened to Sun - Authentic Burmese and Thai in Buffalo, NY. Read a lot about the spot from both Yelp and Google and ended up ordering for 12 people. The food - on first glance was hardly adequate. And when queried - I was told that I should have known that it was. Rude Chef. The inadequate feelings quickly went away when I tasted the food and realized how bland and uninspired it was. So there you have it - a restaurant spot that took itself too seriously, had very little competition and thus became sloppy, slow and rude. Keep away unless you want to spend too much for food that's bland...
