Valmar is a beautiful new restaurant just feet away from the beach with magnificent ocean views. It is well-designed and furnished with a well-organized staff. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. It is by far the best physical structure and setting of any restaurant in the area. The staff appear well-organized and trying hard. The menu is interesting and inviting.
My visit there on a Friday afternoon, however, was lacking in a number of important respects which badly marred my experience.
First, the portion size of the house white wine I ordered looked so small in the large wine glass it came in that I thought it must have been a mistake.
Next, I ordered two appetizers. The coco shrimp and the shrimp-stuffed wontons. Both were well prepared and presented but the server brought me the crab-stuffed wontons instead of the shrimp. She offered to take it back but who wants to deal with the inconvenience of waiting for a replacement? I didn't. Fortunately for me the crab wontons were quite delicious. The coco shrimp, however, though it looked good and was well-prepared was disappointingly dry and tough.
The appetizers are eaten by hand but only one rather flimsy napkin was originally served to me. When my server came to check on my progress she removed that one used napkin from the table without asking me saying she would return with more. But I was left eating my fried finger food for 10 minutes without any napkin at all before she finally returned with more.
While all this was going on there was a table of diners not far away on the terrace who were so obnoxiously loud for the hour and a half I was there that they detracted considerably from my enjoyment.
There was also an 8 or 9 yr. old boy who repeatedly removed decorative stones from the ground next to my table and walked around the outdoor seating area banging them together to make noise. I told him to stay away from me but he did not. He appeared to be completely without parental supervision and no Valmar staff member intervened to stop him from annoying me and the other diners.
My final complaint is that the margarita I ordered was served with salt around the rim, which I know is common, but at a restaurant which holds itself out as a cocktail specialist the failure to ask me "with or without salt?" was another disappointing surprise.
To conclude, the menu looks interesting, the set and setting are beautiful and I will return to try some other menu items. Maybe all my troubles were only a result of the lunar eclipse and next time will be a 4 or 5 star experience.
05/26/22. This is my third visit. It may be my last. Three strikes and you're out. But first about my second visit some months ago. I ordered the filet mignon cooked medium. It was a baseball and arrived raw in much of the middle. I sent it back and it was still raw. I sent that back and received a replacement which was also raw in the middle. I sliced that one into pieces and requested they be cooked to medium. On the fourth try after waiting 30 minutes and eating my sides my slices came back cooked correctly.
Today (5/26) I ordered dorado al ajillo with salad and chorizo risotto as an appetizer. The risotto was delicious but so hot that it burned my mouth. The dorado with a few steamed veggies was adequate but too chewy for my taste. The mixed green salad wad served without dressing which I later requested. The dressing was an unremarkable vinagrette. As I ate the salad I was profoundly disappointed to find several greens with slimy brown rotten parts which I separated and brought to the attention of my server He took them to the chef who aplogized. I requested an adjustment of the bill in lieu of the offered glass of wine or dessert. It appears my $51.00 tab was discounted by $4.00. I'll say no more. It's a beautiful setting. One of the best on the entire island -- right next to the water. Not all bad. Service was very good. But watch out...
Read moreSo I was looking for a spot to have lunch with my Mom and came across this beautiful spot in Joyudas, Cabo Rojo around lunch time, roughly 1:30pm.
I parked and I immediately notice a staff member approaching us to greet us and escort us to our table, very classy to say the least, so thank you. When you come into the bar area, the team opens the door for you! Very nice to see.
This is one of those unique places in this particular area where the Chef’s express their creativity with the beautiful plates they serve. Started off with two beers (Corona for me, Mom went PR on me with a Medalla) while browsing their extensive selection… Mom immediately called out how cold the beer was, I agree, mine was too!
We wanted something light, so I ordered the hummus and ordered for Mom the Ceviche de Dorado (Mahi Mahi). Plates came out nicely presented as I would expect from a high-end establishment as Valmar.
The place has ample space for bigger crowds and a few sections to accommodate your views of the ocean surrounded by big mahogany trees, the bar area was beautiful, I didn’t take a pics of the bar, at the time, workers were talking and I didn’t want to interrupt.
Let me not forget the area to take your selfie picture, thanks Mom for making my experience wonderful!
I was conversing with the gentleman and he said they also play live music between 5:30pm to 10:30pm. I told him I would circle back to enjoy dinner as the sun sets. The place is romantic and all-around awesome ambiance.
The friendly doggie belongs to the neighbor, cool guy just hanging out lol.
In summary, this is a Valdi...
Read moreMy wife and I came to Valmar Restaurant and had a spectacular experience. A gentleman named Joel was our server and his service was one of the best I have ever had in my life. We visited on a Wednesday by 5 pm.
Arrival: We were greeted and seated promptly.
Server: Joel explained the different options for appetizers, main course, and drinks. Joel offered a level of service that can only be found in the finest places. He was attentive, helpful, and always kept our table in order. He definitely knows how to treat customers and cater them to bring a very romantic experience. He showed great passion for service and hospitality.
Food: We had Money Bags (spicy crab wontons) for appetizer. They were spicy, but not too much, and full of flavor. We also had the soup of the day (pigeon peas soup), which was flavorful, all you want from a Caribbean cuisine soup. We both had the catch of the day (chillo fish), which was cooked to perfection and seasoned like a true Caribbean dish - tasty, but not overpowering. The dessert was the Mozart Planet Chocolate Mousse Cake. The taste was a really nice and soft touch of chocolate that will satisfy your sweet craving. It looked like Saturn with a comet by its side (truly a piece of art).
Place: The atmosphere was cozy, with soft live music. The restaurant is next to the ocean and you can see the sunset.
Overall: The experience was beautiful, exquisite for romance. The food tastes great, and the portions are good. We loved the service. Everything came together to make this an...
