I gave Downtown Local another shot today hoping for the best. Downtown Local is a work of art in itself in how it is designed and has immense curb appeal. I work and live in Pescadero, making downtown a convenient location to grab a coffee. Upon arrival this morning, I was caught off guard to see the UPS driver inside talking to the barista without a mask on. I stood there confused wondering why the barista wasn't saying anything about this- for some reason feeling that it wasn't my place to say something. I was extremely uncomfortable. Looking back, I realize I should have left at this point. Instead I stayed, maintaining optimism that there must be a good reason the two felt comfortable like this. Once the UPS driver left, the barista dry-ly said hi. In past experiences I gave her the benefit of the doubt and figured she'd had a rough day and it wasn't anything personal. Having spent five years in the food/drink service industry myself, I keep this in mind. Having been here several times by now and witnessing the warm interaction with the UPS driver, I realized that it wasn't the result of a "rough day". The interaction as I ordered only continued to make me feel as if me coming here for coffee made me nuisance. I intended to come to Downtown Local to enjoy a coffee and finish a couple of assignments at the tables out front as it is a beautiful sunny day. Instead, I left feeling condescended and unwelcome. I regretfully payed $6.17 plus a 20% tip for three shots over ice with cream. Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily think this was personal. Sometimes it's just a personality thing. I have friends and family whom I love who don't have the nature to be warm and welcoming and can be stand off-ish as well. I do, although, feel that in having a customer service position it is important to at least fake it till you make it. Give some effort in making the situation feel good for the customer in respects to your employer and your job. In the past, myself and my partner have gotten mochas, but they gave us upset stomachs so I thought it wold be a good idea to see if it was maybe the chocolate. My shots over ice with cream is a good fit. The flavor is bold and clearly quality coffee. I agree with paying more for convenience especially when you are in a small town, but I wouldn't pay $6.17 for three shots with cream anywhere. It is worth the drive to Peets/Starbucks to pay $2.85 for this coffee and avoid having to feel the way it feels to interact with this barista Healthy boundaries I genuinely wish the best for Downtown Local and this barista. I will send love from afar. All in all, I give Downtown Local two out of five stars for my experiences here and would not recommend to...
Read moreThe music and store layout were awesome! Super fun vibes. But the woman who helped me was extremely unfriendly. I, like other reviewers, wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. Then I read other reviews, and it seems like this is a thing with her. She gave absolute bare-minimum answers to my questions and made me feel dumb for asking them. When I asked if there was wifi, she said, "yep". I said "Great! What's the password?". "There isn't one. But it's a 1 hour limit so...", said in a way so as to say, "so make it quick then get out". There weren't any napkins, cream, or milk out, so I had to ask for all those things, and again, her responses felt super curt and kind of hostile. It was totally on and off with other customers though; some she was friendly to, and some she definitely was not. I like what another reviewer said; it's okay if you're not a warm and bubbly person, but if you're in the food-service industry (and I have been), you have to fake it a bit. Otherwise customers don't feel welcome. And I definitely didn't feel welcome. Also, a small drip coffee was 4.50 - a bit steep. I wouldn't recommend this to friends and family; it's just...
