I’ve been getting burritos from Somis Market for 40 years. I know lots of places have increased their prices in the last couple of years, but this is wildly, inappropriately expensive for a spot known for breakfast burritos. I’ve never walked out of here without a burrito in my entire life until today. Minimum 12 dollars for a breakfast burrito? 4 dollars each for soft tacos? I’m assuming the food is still tasty, but I can’t verify that since I’m not going to pay 12 dollars for a tortilla wrapped around primarily potatoes and eggs. No deals anywhere on the menu. I’m more than disappointed - I’m practically heart broken. I cant bring myself to 1-star them, but I wanted to. One of my all time favorite spots has immediately and permanently been erased from my list. There’s no way this is going to be sustainable for them. Talking with other locals in town about it, they all agreed and said they couldn’t believe how crazy expensive the prices here have gotten. I bet lots of locals who are infrequent but loyal customers show up, order their usual and then get a shock when the final price shows up only to steer clear from now on. So sad. Truly the end of an era. I saw other reviews (I’m assuming from independently wealthy customers) dropping the term “pricey”, but that’s quite the understatement. FWIW, I had plenty of money to get whatever I wanted off the menu, but I have that money only because I make financially sound decisions. And this place is not a financially sound decision. For those prices, I’d go out to a place I knew was more expensive already like a Mexican seafood spot or something. Oh yeah, 14$ micheladas too. For beer and Clamato with some salt on a glass. Get real. In an area saturated with amazing Mexican food, I’d rather go down the road a mile and get Establos (equally good food for much less), or sit down at El Tecolote and get a whole restaurant experience with amazing food and bigger portions for the same price. Sorry Somis Cafe, you lost...
Read moreA nice out of the way, casual, local restaurant. Tasty food, great portions, a really great value. One tip: No free refills on fountain drinks but a convenience market is attached so you can buy any one, or more, of your favorite bottled drinks sold there instead of a fountain drink. I went strawberry picking with my friends at Underwood Family Farms just a couple of blocks away and we all agreed we'd definitely come back to eat at the Somis Cafe next time we go pick berries. I had the chilaquiles which were really good, one of my friends ordered a giant taco salad, we tried helping her finish it but couldn't, and my other friend ordered a burrito which was also a big portion. She also complained about the fact she had to pay for a refill for her horchata drink which to me was hilarious because I realized that we're so spoiled with the unlimited refills we get at most places in L.A. that we forget it costs the local business $$ to do that. All in all a great outing and a great place to stop for a...
Read moreI wish this was a positive review. My Hispanic woman called in a breakfast burrito order for pickup @0922am. We arrived not 5mins later and expected to wait a little like anything. As I waited in the car in the rear narrow parking alley I noticed my woman came back to the car exactly 1-hour after she called in the order looking very upset holding a burrito that looked sickly small as a cheap Taco Bell bean n Cheese.
She explained to me her order was not only ready and sitting there under the not working heat lamp counter the entire 45-mins she was inside but Several field worker types got in and out faster while she was told her order was “almost ready” while she stared at it not 6Ft away from the front counter. They Ignored her completely and served several others while lying to her face. The treatment and absurdly long wait was not worth the cold Now $14 Burrito that was never more than $10 before.
SHAME ON YOU SOMIS...
