WARNING! I have lived in Altadena for many years and always make it a point to help local businesses. I finally got around to visiting The Little Red Hen Coffee Shop today, on a fine Saturday morning. First warning sign, only one other couple was sitting at the restaurant (9:10am). We had a difficult time understanding the waitress, which made ordering food an issue. The coffee was un-drinkable--rancid to be more precise. I told her so, she didn't seem to care or understand, and I believe left on the bill at the end. I ordered an Omelette with cheese and my son ordered the kids meal, scrambled eggs and a pancake. 45 minutes later, the food came out (no, really, 45 minutes later). The Omelette was a small pile of eggs covered in plastic pre-graded cheddar cheese (not melted) and hash browns heavily salted. I paid an extra $1 for a very small piece of sourdough bread dipped in butter. I asked for the bill when the food came out. At this point I wanted to leave, we tried a few bites, it was gross and upset my stomach. The pancake had no flavor.

The food was over-priced and inedible. I have dined at the finest truck stops around the country and gross ones as well. This was a new low in restaurant food.

We drove to another breakfast place in Altadena and had breakfast. Yeah,...

I do not know how this place has the ratings that is does. I live 5 mins away and decided to try this place at a "slow" time.

We walked in and needed three seats together. The table that seats 4 was vacant and filled with dirty plates. We patiently waited for someone to help us but no one ever did. Two of us waited 10 minutes for the third person to arrive. The entire time the lady behind the counter never greeted us and instead starred us down whenever we made eye contact.

Five minutes after the third person arrived, one of the other guests was so sweet that he told the mean lady "I think the girls want the big table." The mean lady starred him down and said "I know, but taking care of this now" as she walked away. Still no contact with us.

So, after 15 minutes of rude treatment we left with a bad taste and vowed never to return. Hopefully that lady is the owner, otherwise I feel bad for the owner for having such a terrible employee or...

I usually come to support this small intimate restaurant every time I come home to Altadena. Today I was by far embarrassed and wished I had taken my family elsewhere. 2 out of 4 orders were wrong, we were outside and it was hot and had to continuously ask for water ( due to the constant personal conversations that were going on inside The restaurant, we were served cold food, and was told that the other waiter shouldn’t have to deal with this because it wasn’t her table. Might I add there are only 4 tables. When we told them the food was cold and that we didn’t want it, the employees started arguing and yelling inside the restaurant at each other about us. My family was so uncomfortable and I vouched for this place telling them not to judge. But the attitude and the service was 0 star. I’m saddened by this because I was born and raised...

Hands down my favorite dining experience in such a long time! Soul food at its finest! You absolutely taste how much love goes into each dish! The shrimp and grits wholeheartedly knocked my socks off! This family owned business has been around for over 50 years and it absolutely makes sense how and why when you visit! Everyone is so nice and attentive! The woman making the desserts and food was such a breath of fresh air to talk to! You can tell how much of a perfectionist she is with the food! Even the coffee tastes amazing there! Small and large details make every bit of the experience legendary! If you like soul food prepared with love this should be your next meal!

Such a great experience. Saw them featured in Eater for LA’s best breakfast spots. Barbara was a delight, so helpful, and the food was absolutely fantastic. I got the 2-2-2 with blueberries added to the pancakes. Eggs were cooked perfectly and the flavor of the pancake was so good I ended up taking what I couldn’t eat home with me. My partner had the Low Rider breakfast sandwich, with no meat - Barbara added garlic spinach to it and he said it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches he’s ever had. Great hot sauce (nice and vinegary), really good coffee too. 10/10 will be back.
