This place is a perfect example of how you cannot trust star ratings. As of writing this, this cafe has a 4.9 star review rating with 56 reviews. Sounds good right? I may be mistaken, but shouldn't 5 stars denote a truly exceptionaly great place, 4 stars a good place, 3 stars an average place, 2 stars a below average place, and 1 star a bad place? Apparently not, according to the plethora of 5 star reviews this cafe has been attributed by other reviewers.
The reality is, this is a small cafe that serves very mediocre coffee, has a very minimaly comfortable seating area, and all of their various pastries/food items are Sams brand bought and resold to you at 2 to 3x the price. The one positive thing I'll say is that it was relatively clean, and I liked the wall painting.
I ordered a latte on my visit, with a slice of pound cake. The latte was middling in quality ( a bit over milky with none of the coffee flavor traits that denote an exceptional cup of coffee ), and the pound cake was a slice of Sams bakery bought pound cake...neither were exceptional in any way. It is unfortunate to say, but there is nothing here that practically anyone couldn't just do themselves for a third the price and with practically no effort.
Go and read the multitude of other 5 star reviews with people saying how great the coffee, pastries, and cakes are. They are ALL bought from Sams. Do you think Sam's cakes, danishes, and cupcakes are worthy of geat praise? Apparently these other reviewers do.
In my humble but informed opinion, this place is worthy of a solid and below average 2 stars at best based on its coffee and food, and the ambiance and cleanliness are decent. The place could be worse, but is below average overall, and there are plenty of better cafe options in Austin.
Even in the immediate area, the boring and ubiquitous Starbucks is worth a solid 3 star rating, and it's just a couple minutes away by car. Starbucks is basically the same price, but has consistent and decent coffee. If this place was priced in accordance with it's quality, it would at least have some positive attribute and serve a purpose...but it is priced at the same level as a Starbucks, but offers even less. I personally do not care for Starbucks all that much, but why anyone comes here other than they live in the attached apartment complex and don't want to drive 3 minutes away,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI came in with a friend, and we were in a great mood, excited for some coffee. I ordered an iced espresso with a pump of vanilla and a splash of cream ā something Iāve ordered many times at different coffee shops. But the barista immediately pushed back, insisting I was really ordering a latte and saying he wouldnāt charge me for ājust espresso.ā I tried to clarify that I didnāt want a latte ā just a splash of cream, not a full cup of milk.
He told me he āknows betterā and that heās been doing this for a living, implying I was trying to trick him. I explained that Iām a barista too, and that this is a very simple, common drink ā nothing unusual. He then called me ādemandingā just because I asked for a pump of vanilla.
In the end, he refused to make the drink and we left. Iāve never been treated with such condescension at a coffee shop before. A really disappointing and unwelcoming experience.
To add to it, I asked for one pump of a vanilla syrup, why would I be ordering a latte if thatās not I want ? The owner also should be aware that an espresso with even 12 pumps of syrup itās still an espresso, and what makes it a latte is the amount of milk,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRocket Coffee continues to be a great coffee shop to get your coffee. It has lots of parking in front. There is also outdoor seating to use. I do not want to change anything I previously wrote. Just come on by and try it for yourself!
Previously written; This might be my favorite coffee shop. The care the batista puts into making a great cup of coffee shows in the taste. Lee Rockstar, rocks. She opens on time and knows your order before you do, but if not, she can help you decide. Just remember, if you take 1 of each, you don't have to decide.
Rocket offers more than coffee with several options of pastries as well as cups and coffee grounds in case you can't get there.
During the week, Rocket opens at 630 am and on Sat/Sun at 0700. So if you are up early and looking to read a book or just get a nice cup of Jo, then stop by Rocket and say hi, tell them I recommended them.
My last alibi, they have doggy treats for your furry companion. And....they have a trivia question each day for $2 off your coffee if you get it correct, and you don't have to be the 4th caller! So what are you...
