Hey Y’all! The Pirate Hunter’s Food Reviews finishes 2023 with this final review of the year for a very well deserving pizzeria!
I have had the pleasure of experiencing the culinary delight that is Pizza Modo Mia on a few different occasions, located in the heart of West Ashley, Charleston, South Carolina. As a true pizza aficionado with ties to Brooklyn, I must say that this establishment has successfully transported the essence of real New York pizza to Chucktown.
From the first heavenly bite, it was evident that Pizza Modo Mia takes its craft seriously. The crust, perfectly thin and delightfully crispy, brought me straight back to the iconic pizzerias of Brooklyn. The sauce, a harmonious blend of tomatoes and herbs, provided the authentic flavor profile that any self-respecting New Yorker craves.
Exquisite meatballs, perfectly seasoned and flawlessly crafted for an unparalleled dining experience. A true symphony of flavors that elevates the art of meatball making. A true Taste of Little Italy hidden in West Ashley.
What truly sets Pizza Modo Mia apart is not just their dedication to crafting a genuine NY pizza & Italian eatery experience, but also their unwavering support for our military and first responders. It's heartening to see a local establishment embrace and honor those who serve our community and country. Their commitment to giving back adds an extra layer of warmth to the dining experience.
The ambiance of the restaurant complements the culinary journey seamlessly. The friendly staff, adorned with smiles, create an inviting atmosphere that makes you feel like you're part of the Pizza Modo Mia family. The walls are wrapped to pay tribute to the owner Mike’s love for New York where he grew up.
Whether you're a transplant missing the taste of home or a local looking for an authentic New York slice, Pizza Modo Mia is the answer. It's not just a pizzeria; it's a culinary bridge connecting the charm of Chucktown with the genuine flavors of Brooklyn. Five stars don't seem sufficient to capture the excellence this establishment offers. Pizza Modo Mia is a true gem in Charleston's culinary landscape.
Enjoy my fellow Pizza Lovers! I’ll be on the hunt for the next 5 Star Restaurant!

Read moreSo, firstly for context, I had another person go in and get me a pizza. I ordered a rather standard pie with just sauce and cheese, no toppings at all. Not my forte but hey, comforting when you don't wanna mix with much else. And as far as I have heard, New York Pizza is supposed to be famous for its cheese pizzas.
So, as for the positives, the pie was HUGE for the price. The dough was frikken' fantastic and the cheese was alright. So from this you'd expect me to leave a great review right?
Now listen. Maybe I just got a pizza with bad tomato on it. Or maybe it was a bad batch. But the pie itself was lukewarm. Now that's fine I actually like cold pizza. Yeah I know, real weird. But when I say there tasted something OFF with the pie they gave me I mean it. I have had better pizzas and frikken MOD PIZZA or DOMINOES. The pizza tasted unusually sour. Like to an unbearable extent. Maybe it was the sauce, maybe the herbs, or maybe whatever olive oil they used I don't know. And while I have never gone to New York, I have tried all kinds of pizza around.
And when I say it was SOUR, it was SOUR. Like uneddible and slightly rancid, as if the sauce itself had gone bad. I've had sour tomatos on my pizza before, but this, it did not taste right. It was not the tangy sour of the breed of tomato. This was to the extent where I did not feel comfortable even finishing the thing. To the extint where the pizza actively tasted as if it had gone bad and was made with rancid ingriedients.
So in short, as a first time customer I wanted to try this place and ended up with a lukewarm and fairly rancid tasting pizza. Maybe it was made in the morning and reheated. Maybe you should go during lunch. i don't know. But it did NOT TASTE RIGHT.
Maybe it was just my experience alone judging by all the great reviews, but heed me when I say I BARELY write reviews. Especially this detailed. So suppose I will be updating this if I ge an upset...
Read moreFirst off- I was SO excited for NY pizza near home!! I go to NYC often and always enjoy as much pizza as I can while in the city. After several failed attempts, I finally got thru to someone to place my order at 7:15. Was told the item that I wanted was out of stock so I improvised for a plain pepperoni pizza. I arrived around 7:40p and it was ready to go by around 8p. No biggie, except they close at 8p and had a line of people waiting to order. They continually hurried people along in order to close soon after 8p. When I got home, I found my pizza WAY undercooked. The crust under the sauce was raw and impossible to hold (yes, even folded). I had to cut it with a fork and knife. The mozzarella sticks were standard. They were cold b/c they had been fried well before the pizza was finished. So, all in all, not impressed, but I do know they just opened and need to work out some kinks. I’ll give it another try again in the future, but will order well before closing time!!
