JAX Northside Food & Spirits — Restaurant in Charlevoix

Our server was amazing...however we were judged the moment we walked in. The hostess was very rude and said "I have a table for you that is right up your alley." We imagined it might be in the bar but no such luck. We were sent to a table in the back corner. We ordered 1 appetizer and a dinner for each of our 6 patrons. For 5 of us our food was luke warm at best and had no real flavor. The last one's food came out scalding hot. We waited for over an hour and a half for our food. We were told the kitchen was backed up but what we believe happened was that they forgot the salmon so they kept the rest of the food in the warmer until they got it done. The steak was barely seared on the outside and raw in the middle, the shrimp was rubbery, the burger was dried out and had no flavor, the over priced grilled cheese was so hard you could barely bite into it, the salmon only had the "maple glaze" on the very end and lastly the brisket melt was dry and tasteless. One last issue was that one person asked for a baked potato and it came with mashed. When we mentioned it, we were told they were out. There was no asking what was wanted as a substitute it was just sent with cold mashed potatoes (p.s. the gas station next door has potatoes on sale 10 lbs for $1.99 they could have made it right.) I do have to say the french fries and cottage cheese were good. However if you are from out of town and you dont fit in with their stuffy collared shirts and khakis dont bother. Tremendous Recovery!

One of the few places we felt comfortable eating dinner during the pandemic was JAX new outdoor patio. We had a great seat on the edge of the golf course and settled in for a relaxing evening. Our waitress was a delight: helpful, knowledgable and cheerful.

When our meals came my wife’s shrimp were healthy portion...nice-sized, tasty and properly cooked. Unfortunately, my salmon was badly undercooked, still cool in the center. Our waitress was very apologetic, offered to comp my meal and promptly headed to the kitchen for a properly cooked replacement. However, salmon #2 was identical to #1. Now mortified, our waitress made a beeline for the kitchen. She was far more upset with the situation than I was. Also, the restaurant owner promptly came to our table, apologized profusely and assured me that she would personally supervise the prep of salmon #3.

And lo and behold salmon #3 was thoroughly cooked (and checked before being brought to the table). JAX went further with additional accommodation for the situation. Suffice it to say that they turned a bad situation into a success. We left as very pleased customers! I had high expectations, not sure why, the waitress was really nice, the salad bar was small but fresh, wasn't expecting a salad bar but kudos for......it. After ordering an appetizer to split with my companion, I ordered a jumbo shrimp cocktail off the evenings special menu, I then said I couldn't possibly pass up a chance to try the salmon with a risotto that sounded amazing. She didn't hear me, and when she brought all the food out at once, appetizers and entree's for the other guests at our table, I got the shrimp I ordered, and nothing else. When I told her she could bring my entree whenever it was ready, she just looked blank. She apologized and said she would rush it through I told her I'd changed my mind after seeing the incredible hamburger across from me. After everyone had finished, my burger choice arrived, lightly charred on the outside, mushy pink on the inside, having ordered medium well and not a fan of raw hamburger I cut it in half, it fell apart in my hands in a pile of ..... No bartender, at least the lady doing dishes behind the bar didn't seem to have any interest in serving us , having walked away without a word at all.
