I had super high hopes for this experience. It was my first meal of the day so I went in hungry and ready to eat. I arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 4p and ordered the Soul Leg as is (greens, mac and cheese and dressing about 1 cup serving size each) with a side of yams (1/2 cup) and 16oz Arnold Palmer. With tip I paid $50.
Pros: 1. The service was really good. They were friendly and thoroughly explained the menu. 2. The employees checked on me several times, made sure I had napkins and anything else I needed. 3. My food was served quickly because a I ordered the same as a to go order so they gave it to me and remade the to go order. 4. The drink was good, sweet, but good.
Not pros: 1. The turkey leg was dry y'all. It did not fall of the bone. I had to twist my fork and use a knife. I let the server know and he tried to rectify the issue with sauce and turkey gravy broth but that's not how it works with dry meat. 2. The stuffing was over salted and a little dry. I couldn't eat it. Also, maybe this is in a pinch but the staff talked openly about taking dressing out of the freezer and microwaving it. 3.The mac and cheese was ok and helped balance the other salty sides. It's cheesyish and uses penne pasta. It was fine but I wouldn't go back for it. 4. The greens... I don't know if they're fresh or canned but the turkey pieces were very dry. I thought the seasoning was a little salty but good enough. The drink is 6 freaking $$
I'm glad I went and I'm glad I tried it and supported. I felt welcomed and accommodated. I don't think I'll be back but if I do, I'll be sure to ask for a fresh leg and different sides and I'll bring...
Read moreLord. Where do I start? I noticed that there was a bit of a wait for certain menu items so I ordered the items that could be made the quickest. I had the Soul Leg along with three cakes - red velvet, yellow cake with chocolate icing and pound cake. Every single item was delicious. This is what I want when I’m craving soul food. The collard greens were seasoned to perfection and had very little stems. The mac and cheese was flavorful, rich and cheesy. The dressing wasn’t overly seasoned with sage (like other dressings I’ve had) and it was moist but not too runny or dry. It appeared that the sides were sprinkled with a sweet drizzle. The turkey leg tasted as though it was marinated, smoked then baked. It was incredibly tasty and tender. I think it’s probably the best smoked turkey leg I’ve ever eaten. I’m incredibly picky when it comes to soul food but this food checked all of my boxes. I visit Charlotte bi-monthly and this place has officially become my favorite soul food stop. Peace and Love to the staff. You all are...
Read moreMy buddy who lives in Charlotte has been talking about going to this place for the past year. You drive by and don’t really know what to expect since there are no windows, but I feel like that’s part of the fun. When you walk in it feels like you’re going to a friend’s house to hang out for a really good meal. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and offer really good recommendations.
They’re known for their turkey legs, and I would highly recommend the Dirty Leg, which is the turkey leg topped with their dirty rice and hot honey sauce. It’s a big portion so you could split between two people if you’re not starving. Definitely get the Thanksgiving Egg rolls too, very good. I’ve seen a few reviews saying this is the best Mac and cheese they’ve ever had, sadly I disagree, it’s just average to me but I prefer mine thicker and this was pretty runny. My buddy got the Salmon Burger that our waitress also raved about and said it was solid.
