So last Saturday my friend Casey posted about Fuji Hibatchi Sushi Asian Bistro in Onida. The pictures looked amazing. My daughter had the Monday off, the weather was great, so we jumped in the car, took the top off and drove the 90 miles to get there.
The place was amazing. We were greeted promptly upon arrival. They took our drink order which arrived right away.
I followed my friends recomendation and had the Lobster and Shrimp tempura. My daughter had a teriyaki bento box which came with miso soup. We shared an order of squid sushi.
When my daughters miso soup arrived I decided to add an order of Thai Tom Yum soup. This arrived in a timely maner, as did the other food.
The food was fantastic and very reasonable. The food and drink with tip came to a little over $50.00.
Kyle, the owners 10 year old son, kept us company, with our permission, and he was excited to hear about my daughters Chinese heritage. Everything was so good, we decided to come back with friends.
This Friday we returned with friends. We arrived around lunch time with a party of 5, and we were the only ones there. We ordered about 6 different sushi rolls, along with the lobster and shrimp tempura, 4 entrees, seafood soup, calamari, octapus sushi, california roll and sodas.
The food arrived in a fair amount of time. The soups and salads arrived quickly. The rolls were a little staggered, but close enough.
After all the rolls arrived, my friends stated that there was so much food, they could have skipped the entrees. However there was very little left over, and we all were stuffed. They never take to go boxes, but did this time because they enjoyed it that much.
My daughters friend does not like sushie, but loves hibatchi food, she tried the yum roll and the yellow fin roll and loved it, and stated that she wants to try it again.
The food was delicious and the presentation was great. The fish was tender, fresh and flavorful. The only complaints, my daughter stated that the seafood soup did not contain enough seafood, and the sushi, was a little to staggered.
We were the only ones there, and only one sushi chef on duty the wait was doable, yet at lunch time the wait could be long if the place was packed. I do understand it is hard to schedule staff during this covid time. The plaza was not very busy and the other businesses and restaurand did not have many customers.
The restaurant is clean as were the rest rooms. There is sanitizer and rubbing alcohol on the tables for customer use.
Between all of our food, drinks and tip it was around $200 dollars, but in our eyes, and taste buds, well worth the money and the 180 mile round trip. All together I drove 360 miles this week for their food, and it was worth every penny. We...

When eating sushi, you only need to try one piece of nigiri to know everything there is know about a sushi restaurant. The rice and the fish of that one bite will reveal the skill and effort that went into its creation.
My first piece of nigiri was, unfortunately, utterly typical for CNY. The texture of the rice was a bit on the mushy side but better than some places in the area. It was, however, entirely bland and tasteless- just marginally sticky white rice, it added nothing but carbohydrates to the sushi. Sushi rice should be prepared with vinegar or sake and I could taste neither.
The tuna was pumped so full of red dye to give it a "fresh" appearance it was nearly a light source in its own right. Sadly, it, too, was tasteless as if it had been frozen and thawed several times.
Service was acceptable, no complaints there, and the food did come fast....but speed isn't always a good thing.
I think the folks at Fuji Hibachi are trying, but the performance lacked the proper ingredients and skill in preparation. Not worth a repeat...
Read moreThis is the sushi or teriyaki shop I go to after a long day of work to relax. I don't go here because it has the best sushi, both Ocean in downtown Oneida and East Sushi in downtown Sherril are far better at making sushi for the most part, but because it has the best service. The service here is kind, gentle, prompt and logical, with tea pots that are large enough to keep you satisfied for some time and tea cups that are of a good form for enjoying the tea and will not burn your hands. The atmosphere is also the fanciest, sleekest and most elegant of all the sushi restaurants in the region, which both makes it good for formal meetings, and also can be a comfort of and by itself when one is tired. Overall, this is a place to rest, stretch out, drink tea and maybe eat a little sushi or teriyaki, not a place to experience sushi.
I would also say they're a little better at teriyaki than sushi, although I really was not impressed by the hibachi...
