El Patron Tacos & Tequila — Restaurant in Clinton

I’ve been on a taco thing lately as I’ve been out of town in Birmingham, where there are at least as many taco trucks/street taco spots as there is Tex-Mex. And if you’ve grown up on Tex-Mex (which has its place), good birria and elotes will make you cry.

So low and behold when I was searching for a taco place at home, I find out that El Patron is not just another run of the mill Mexican place (they all kind of run together ngl).

I ordered a birria plate with three tacos, two pastor, and three asada, rice and beans, and guac for a few people. You get the option of having your tacos with the traditional corn tortillas, cilantro, and onion or the American flour tortillas, cheese, and tomato. (I chose corn/cilantro/onion.)

Everything was really good. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the birria being double tortillas but I know that’s a thing at a lot of places, but it was a bit dense. The meat portion was large and the consummé was great. The pastor tacos were the star for me with lots of pineapple and not over cooked. The asada was good as well, but I only had a bite as I didn’t order them for myself.

The guac was better than average, but the chips lacked seasoning…and yeah, the salsa was more like something I’d use to make rice than serve with chips. It was a bit thin and pinkish rather than red, yet it did have a good flavor.

The road is a bit dark right there at night, so myself (and the truck behind me) missed the entrance and had to turn around. And parking isn’t the most convenient if you need an ADA spot or have someone in your party who cannot walk very far or cannot do steps. The spots are a little far from the door since the plaza is built into a hill, so there are steps...

So when we went it was practically empty, ok cool no reason to rush. Order our food, get some salsa. First off the salsa was straight puree salsa water, there was no way to actually put it on a chip because it was a liquid. My kids like the way it tastes so I didn't really complain I just waited for my food to come out. He ordered a taco salad and I ordered fajita nachos. The nachos I got were awesome exactly what I wanted and what I expected! But the taco salad y'all! The meat was undercooked and there was absolutely no seasoning. Then you can tell they did not drain the meat before they put it in there because the bottom was soggy with grease like lots of grease. When I spoke to the employee about it and you could obviously see we had not ate it and they told me "sorry that's how it comes. We do not season our meat." Hey then proceeded to get the menu and show me where it says only ground beef It does not say seasoned ground beef. So I simply suggested they should at least drain it from now on before they put it in there if they're not going to season it. I paid my tab and told him they could throw it away because it was garbage. I even still left a tip after paying for something that we literally could not eat. Good luck to them in the future but I highly suggest you start seasoning your meat and take the time to fully cook it and drain it before serving!! I only put the one star so I can leave the review .. when I say VERY dissatisfied and the manager Gabby if I’m not mistaken that was her name is very rude .. I’m traveling passing through Mississippi and I hadn’t ate all day I saw the place passing by .. it was off to the back of the shopping center so I figured it was a hidden gem .. I go in let the guy who was taking orders know I never dined with them and I wanted to place a to go order .. I ordered birria tacos , order of beans / rice and then 2 chicken tacos , 2 shrimp tacos . I Also ask for an additional rice / beans the entire order was incorrect and I was also missing items .. I call ask to speak with the manager and she tells me to bring the food back or I couldn’t get a refund . I took a video offered to send it because like I said I was traveling and passing through . She then rushed me off the phone and told me she had other customers to tend to .. she mentioned people lie and just want a refund I honestly had items missing and what I did have was incorrect .. ima just reach out to my bank and see what I can do it was a 30/40 dollar tab and I can’t even...
