I continued to recall in my mind's eye the signage I'd seen when I traveled through the town of Colfax this morning. I understood the biblical significance of The Sheep Gate in Jerusalem. I remembered, as well, the letters C O F F E E on the storefront. I thought it providential that I might be thirsty; for I had been riding the Triumph since I left Ames an hour or so before. I turned the motorcycle around near the town's Historical Society building and found a parking spot directly in front of Sheepgate Coffee Company. I checked the door and found they were open and true to their posted hours (7AM until 2PM on Monday). I "ungeared", walked through a small vestibule and into the welcoming world of Sheepgate. The two young ladies at the counter were genuine in greeting me and helpful in taking my simple order. I was the only customer for about 20 minutes, so I had a grand time asking a thousand questions about Sheepgate’s efforts to pull men (and women) from “the pit” and back on their journey through the story of reality. I also found out a little more of the backstory to Colfax’s heyday. The gals did their best to answer my questions and laugh at my jokes while I enjoyed a truly satisfying cup of coffee. I’m very glad I stopped in. I’ll be back with some...
Read moreHidden gem just off of I-80! Ordered a cappuccino and it was perfect - foam was like velvet and not broiled/over-steamed, espresso had great flavor. The raspberry crumble bar was also delicious - just the right combo of tart and sweet. Space is also very chic, but the staff are the opposite of pretentious coffee-shop vibes - very friendly and down-to-earth. I’m not a religious person but really resonated with the mission being a non-profit that funds addiction support services in the region. The space felt very welcoming regardless of religious affiliation or walk of life.
I moderated my expectations going in (figured if nothing else the money would be going to a good cause), but Sheepgate truly impressed! They could hold their own in Chicago or any big city. Will certainly be back next time I’m...
Read moreStumbled upon this café after my haircut a few doors down. Not gonna lie, I was surprised to see something so chic and so meticulously designed in Colfax. The gals working were extremely nice and welcoming.
I'm currently doing a coffee detox so I ordered a matcha oat milk latté. It was so good! It tastes like they use real matcha powder and that they actually whisk it with a chasen. I didn't actually watch them make it because I was so enamored with the space, but that's what it tasted like. I love that they don't douse the matcha with sugar like a lot of "hip" coffee shops do. This is the way it's supposed to taste. If you're looking to sweeten it a little then ask for a pump of honey. I'm really, really happy that I...
