I've been a frequent customer to Kamrai over the past four years, but honestly the quality of food and service has decreased dramatically. My friends and I went there last night and had the most upsetting experience:
SERVICE: Extremely slow and un-organized We were sat at a table and left for about 15 mins before someone attended to us to take orders. There were quite a few waiters/waitresses running around, so I don' think the restaurant was "under-staffed." But interestingly none of them would actually make active eye contact with customers at any tables. It's like they pretended to be busy by running here and there (doing nothing based on my observation) but intentionally avoided actually serving people by refusing to look around. Not professional at all.
Then, at one point, one waitresss brought us a dish and asked, "Did you guys order any sushi?" I replied that we ordered a particular special roll and she rushed back to the kitchen (with the dish) to verify if what she brought was actually our order. It's strange that they couldn't figure out what came out of the kitchen. Again, terribly unprofessional.
FOOD: Extremely mediocre, cold, and over-priced We ordered chicken satay and a fried dumpling for apetitizers, which used ot be my favoriate in the past. We also had duck curry, again used to be my favorite, but the duck skin was not crispy, and the curry sauce was icy cold - it felt like the dish had sat in the kitchen for a while before it was brought to us. Crab fried rice: Generally okay, but again not hot or warm enough. Bangkok beef: The dish was warm, but over-seasoned as I almost had a mouth full of unmelted salt on one beef slice. Also, it is rediculous that it only had about 8 very thin slices of beef in a $17 dish. At that point, we were all very upset and didn't even want to waste our energy to bring this up to the management.
Overall, I won' t be returning to this place again. It's a huge shame that what used to be a gem restaurant in this area as become a terrible place with bad service, bad price,...
Read moreI have lived in the State College area for a decade now. I was told about Kamrai 8 years ago and it never worked out that I gotten the chance to dine there. This past Saturday I finally had the chance to eat there and I now I wish I would have made it a point to have eaten there years ago. We arrived a little after they opened and were the second couple to be seated. We were sat in the section which once was the porch of this beautiful old home. AlthoughI found it hard to read the menu in the dim light, I loved the atmosphere with the piano music playing in the background. Everyone that worked there was very friendly and our server was on top of it all for us. To start it off my wife and I had Sushi. My wife had the Dragon Roll and I decided on the Sex on The Moon Roll. While they both were delicious I enjoyed the Dragon Roll more. For the entree my wife had the Pad Thai and I had the Spicy Basil Yaki Udon. Now I didnt try the Pad Thai but my wife loved it. I must say that the Spicy Basil Yaki Udon was amazing. I got it with a medium heat and it was top notch. I generally like to try different foods so that I know I am not missing anything but when I go back Im thinking Ill have this again. We had a wonderful time on a little date during the Christmas season. Give this place a try. Just watch out for the days and times they are open. they are opene a limited...

If you think black pepper is a spice too far, this is your chance to try Thai food! I ordered drunken noodle, and the only flavor was the pork and noodles (and bizarrely some coconut flavor, like they’d used coconut cream in the sauce).
We started with sushi, which might as well have come from Wegmans. Surprisingly little flavor. The wasabi was hard and dry.
I planned to ask for something spicy to try to salvage the drunken noodles, but after the plates hit the table the waiter never returned. They just waited 35 minutes and brought us the bill and asked if we wanted a box for the effectively untouched noodles.
It really is a shame: everything here is great except the food and service, and I hear those are pretty important when it comes to...
