This is my go-to spot for authentic Mexican food.
Zacatecas is an unassuming joint from the outside, part of a strip in the Worthington area. But once you go in - WOW! It's got beautiful decor (very recently renovated and painted) and plenty of seating options including booths and tables.
But the food! Ay, Dios, the food!
I have heard it said that the mark of a good Mexican restaurant is their salsa. From the very first taste, you'll know you're in the right place. Chunky, homemade (and with a hint of spice), you won't have room for your entrees because you ate the entire basket of chips. Don't forget to save room for their queso or guacamole next time, they are equally as worthy of being at your table!
Make sure you order a margarita. They are available on the rocks or frozen, in Lime, Mango or Strawberry (as far as I know) and they are DELICIOUS. Great balance with the tequila and juices. You know you are definitely not at Applebee's when you taste one of these.
What's for dinner? Try their street tacos. On Tuesdays, they are half off, which is an absolute steal. The carne asada (steak) or the chorizo (spicy sausage) are my favorites. Seasoned, juicy, and flavorful, they come on flour tortillas topped with onions and cilantro. I recommend squeezing the provided lime over them along with some of the spicy red sauce, the flavor is out of this world.
Not a fan of tacos? Try their Tex-Mex fajitas dish, it comes out to your table sizzling-hot, doused in queso and with your choice of protein (go with the steak and shrimp!) On the side are refried beans or rice and some tortillas (flour or corn), make yourself the most delicious Mexican wrap.
Finally, I can't forget to mention the staff. So many friendly faces in the building. They're all very knowledgeable and helpful, and they love what they do. Even the chef will come out at times to say hello, make sure you give him a high-five for the amazing food he makes!
That's it. Stop reading this review and go to Zacatecas for dinner tonight. I know I sure can't wait for...
Read moreWe love Mexican food, so really wanted to try this place since it's close and we're really hoping something can occupy the space long term. Sat down and was quickly greeted by a waiter who brought chips and salsa and took our drink orders. The salsa was very mild, but had good flavor. Waiter returned with our drinks and took our food order. My wife and I were going to split Steak Fajitas. The frozen margaritas were very tasty. While waiting for our food, a second waiter came by and asked if we'd like another basket of chips, which we indicated we would. First waiter brought our food, fajitas on a sizzling skillet, flour tortillas, and rice and beans completely filling a plate. but no plates to prepare the fajitas/tortillas. We asked for two plates since we were splitting them. He asked us if we'd like another basket of chips, which we indicated we would. First waiter went off to take another table's drink order and didn't return with plates for 10ish minutes, which by that time we had done without and just used extra napkins instead. Fajitas were good, but not anything out of the ordinary. We never saw either waiter after first waiter returned with plates. Never did get the second basket of chips, which both said they would get. Once we were done eating, the hostess brought us our bill and then took my credit card and returned with credit card slip. I'm willing to cut wait staff a lot of slack with the pandemic, and everything was okay, but if you ask a customer if they want something and they indicate that they do (especially plates) please return promptly. The other table could have waited 1 minute for you to get plates before getting their drink order. And I really wish I'd gotten that second basket of chips -- the first basket was really good :-) We liked it enough to give it another try and hopefully can report on other dishes. I'd like to try the...
Read moreFollowing some of the recommendations on this site, wife and I went to Zacatecas Grill last night (Wednesday, Nov 30). At 6:30 PM, there was no one in the restaurant except staff and that should have been our first clue. Beer was cold, Margaritas were excellent and service was spot on. But thats where the "good things" ended. Food was simply awful. Neither my burrito nor the wife's Fajitas came with traditional lettuce, tomatoes, pico, sour cream or other accoutrements. Mine was a tasteless tortilla filled with awful refried beans (seemed out of a can) and some kind of awful rice. Ordered the beef and could barely find it. Mostly a rice/bean burrito. The Tex mex Fajitas were sizzle hot but barely edible. I tried (3) pieces of the steak and spit out 2 of them as not chewable. Served with small tortillas, refried beans (again like out of a can with white cheese sprinkles) and what seemed like boxed spanish rice with peas added. Fajitas with no lettuce, tomatoes, pico, sour cream or grace - just chewy tough beef covered in this brownish runny cheese sauce. I was up all night sick as a dog. Never...
