Do you like salsas?
I mean, do you REALLY like salsas? If so, then you've found your spot. Salsa verde. Salsa roja. Salsa negra. Salsa cruda. Chipotle salsa. Guacasalsa. All of these and more are available at El Taco Buchon, the most salsa-obsessed taqueria I've ever stepped foot in. All of the tacos here come pre-sauced by the kitchen with AT LEAST one salsa. Some also include a small cup of salsa on the side. Also, there are six distinct salsa available at their salsa bar in addition to every other condiment or garnish you can think of for your tacos.
The tacos themselves are pretty good too. You should start, as I did, with the "Taco Dorado Gobernador," which features shrimp and mozzarella cheese stuffed into a tortilla that is then deep-fried, the cheese melting to become stretchy and gooey, all cooled by shredded cabbage and a creamy salsa they call "ranchero dressing" that is heavy in smoky chipotle flavor. That this taco is buried under cabbage and tomatoes gives it a similar feel to the famous shrimp tacos at "Mariscos Jalisco" in Boyle Heights, but... saucier. If you didn't have enough stuff on this taco, you can add some of the fiery salsa de aciete (oil and chile salsa) that comes alongside it. This was my favorite of the tacos I tried here.
El Taco Buchon's "Carnitas Vampiro" is pretty good too. Here, the shredded fried pork is paired with a mild white cheese that is melted onto a griddled corn tortilla before being smothered in avocado sauce. The carnitas resembles cat food in appearance but tastes alright. Pico de gallo is sprinkled on top. Unlike what I typically think of vampiros, this one is not so crispy that it can't be folded over and enjoyed almost like you would a slice of New York-style pizza. I like that a grilled chile guera is provided on the side.
Lastly, I tried the eponymous "Buchon Taco," which comes with well-browned carne asada, spicy marinated red onions, a tangy "guacasalsa," and shredded cabbage in a flour tortilla. By itself, it was about an average taco as L.A. goes, but when I added the thick salsa roja from the salsa bar, it get much better. The salsa roja reminded me of the tomato-y, bouillon-y Salvadorian-style salsa that one would use with a pupusa. It's very good and does wonders for what is otherwise a very straightforward carne asada taco.
Overall, I liked this place more than I thought I would. It's a modern taco shop run by young people who are excited about the food they're serving. While there are some minor flaws with execution of some of the tacos I tried, the enthusiasm, cleanliness, and courtesy that pervades this operation overcome all of them and make this taqueria...
Read moreFrom the moment we walked into El Taco Buchon, we were greeted with warm welcomes that made us feel right at home. After placing our order, the staff let us know everything would be brought straight to our table—which was a nice touch. Soon after, we were served fresh, warm chips with four different salsas to sample. Each salsa had its own unique kick, and there was more than enough for the whole family to enjoy.
The food itself was flavorful and nearly perfect. As a family, we rated our meals an overall 8/10, which says a lot! Service was great too—the server checked in on us multiple times throughout our meal. We ordered the aguachile, which came out very traditional and not overly spicy. I tried both the grilled and fried shrimp tacos—the grilled were definitely the winner with bold flavor, while the fried were still good but had a heavier batter.
My daughter ordered the asada fries and gave them a straight 10/10. One of my boys got the birria tacos and said they were even better than Teddy’s Red Tacos 😱. My younger kids went with cheese and steak quesadillas—they thought they were a little on the cheesy side but still tasty.
Overall, El Taco Buchon impressed us with great food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere. I would absolutely recommend stopping by if you’re in the area—you won’t be...
Read moreI used to pass by this place on my way to work. Never would've known that it's a perfect hidden hole in the wall. My coworkers finally decided to give this place a try and we came in for lunch. It gets packed during lunch so it's better to come in early to beat the lunch rush. The place is clean and it shares the parking with other stores in the tiny shopping center. There are various Mexican food items available to order. The menu can be overwhelming because you want to try everything.
I ordered a carne asada burrito which comes in a flour tortilla with beans, rice, pico de gallo, and guacamole. It comes with a side of tortilla chips. Before the pandemic you could serve yourself all types of salsa. They had red hot sauce, limes, tomatillo sauce, and guacamole sauce. The burrito is huge and it was flavorful. All the ingredients combined with the salsas made a delicious bite. The carne asada wasn't chewy or full of gristle. The horchata drink was refreshing and it wasn't too sweet. I'm happy this place is near my work and I do want to try the...
