Don Jose Mexican Grill — Restaurant in Contiguous United States

Nice little place. Service was friendly but running time lapse at times. The restaurant had several other diners but was not overly busy. The tortillas chips were fresh, the salsa was richer than most I've had locally. I had Enchiladas Doña Maria con Arroz. Everything was high quality and tasted good, although the chicken could have been moister and more tender. I slightly disagree with the spicing of the rice but it was so close to perfect for this to be the smallest of quibbles. Music and decor were perfect. 2 years later, we returned for lunch, and found everything at least as good. The rice was even better, it might have been over spiced for a few people but the flavor to us was incredible. I had the Huevos con Chorizo, my wife returned to her standby chicken fajitas.

Found this place while out wandering around and what I a pleasant surprise. So far, with the exception of certain menu items at other restaurants around Knoxville, Don Jose's food was by far the best and at a very reasonable price. My wife had the Carnitas. Pork was roasted perfectly and had great flavor. The pico de gallo was fresh and tasty and the re-fried beans were about average and plate also had a generous garnish of avocado. My plate was Beef Chili Verde, which was to me the highlight. Grilled beef strips in a verde sauce unlike i have had anywhere around here. Most places seem to just take straight canned tomatillo salsa for verde, but this was more. It was tangy, spicy with a light sweetness. The rice was cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. I've ate here many times over the year's, usually I do takeout. We decided to go to the restaurant and eat in this time. I ordered the same thing I always order when I eat here, so I'm very familiar with what it should be. The waiter brought out the food but it wasn't what I ordered. After telling him it was wrong he proceeds to grab a menu, slam on the table, point out what I ordered and snatched my plate to "remove" the wrong food. I told him I'd prefer a new order and was ignored. He was rude, never once checked on us to see if we needed anything and trust me when I say he walked right by us repeatedly. We had to ask him for a to go box and the check multiple times. I will never eat here again after being treated like that.
