Update : after a few visits, based on how much the local community loves this place, I have learned to stick with the fried food. It has become one of my favorite places in the Highland Lakes area. The shrimp and trout steal the show for entrees. Pepper jack hush puppies are a unique twist on a classic. And the margaritas are some of the best in the area. The food is great if the right choices are made. The experience can be challenging based on the hit or miss staff. Previous review: Everything about this was bad. The staff was uninformed or uninterested, probably a combination of both. And based on my experience, it starts with the owner and management. To be fair, the vegetables were fresh so I will give credit for that. I will also acknowledge that I requested to sit on the patio and I was the only person on the patio. I arrived last Saturday afternoon at a time that it was not exceptionally busy and there was adequate staffing. I waited 10 minutes or so for my server. She took my order and repeated it to me. I asked for the wifi password, she said she would have to find out what it is. About 20 minutes later she returned with the wrong order and no password. She said she would have my order corrected. I explained that the WiFi password is important to me because I needed to download documents. Another 15-20 minutes, she returned with the correct order but no password. The shrimp on my order was supposed to be grilled and was not but I was going to let it slide. The food was completely without character or flavor. I just wanted to eat and leave as quickly as possible by then. She stepped back out and gave me the incorrect password and my check. I was billed for a full po’boy instead of a half po’boy that I ordered. My waitress had stepped back in before I could let her know. Fed up with it all, I called the restaurant and asked for the manager instead of waiting for my server again. He apologized and said he would have to call another manager on the phone. I told him I didn’t want anything comped, I just wanted to be billed correctly. He also said he didn’t know what she had rang up or why she didn’t ask him for the password. He explained that their system was complicated. When he returned from correcting my bill, he asked for my phone number so the owner could call me. It has been 8 days with no follow up. I noticed that my Map records showed I was there for over an hour ordering a sandwich and dealing with incompetence and excuses for mediocre food....
Read moreGood food... just not "great" food. We went here on a recommendation from a friend. We are big fans of "peel-n-eat" shrimp so that was our main reason for coming here.
We were seated immediately upon walking in the door. They have plenty of parking but it was late at night in January, so warmer times of the year they might be busier. Our drink order was taken right away but oddly we weren't asked if we wanted to start off with anything as an appetizer. I had an iced tea (unsweet) and it was good but not very fresh.
For an appetizer we had the spinach artichoke dip with chips. The dip is good and the chips are fresh. Just know, it's big and could easily be enough for four people. As mentioned, we are big fans of "peel-n-eat" shrimp so we each had an order. The shrimp are big and are boiled in a Cajun seasoning and served over ice. It came to the table and the shrimp were still pretty warm. No lemons and no horseradish. The shrimp were undercooked. They should have been boiled just a bit longer and then immersed in ice water. And traditionally peel-n-eat are served with lemon wedges and horseradish with the cocktail sauce.
For the meal we ordered a Caesar salad and grilled Mahi with baked potato and grilled asparagus. My friend had a few bites of the salad and stopped eating. The lettuce was old and there seemed to be an abundance of the dressing making it just a soggy mess. The Mahi was okay, but not fresh. The potato was very good (loaded) and the grilled asparagus was great.
To top off the meal, we shared a slice of Turtle Cheesecake. The cheesecake was good but I'm pretty sure they do not bake it. So, overall the meal was good and we would go back to try some other items. If they had only cooked the shrimp a little more it would have been perfect. Seems like a fun place and nice people. I'm sure we...
Read moreMy husband and I visited this seafood restaurant last evening. It was about 6:30 so it was not terribly busy. The hostess was polite and sat us at a table where we felt comfortable distancing ourselves from other patrons. We like the area in front of the restaurant as it is open with nice big windows. We noticed the people serving at the bar and other wait staff were wearing their masks under their chins. This made us a little nervous of their lack of COVID awareness. We ordered the grilled shrimp with the brown cajun sauce with bits of crawfish, shrimp and crab. My plate arrived and seemed empty with a scoop of rice pilaf and 6 grilled shrimp. The staff later brought my brown sauce in a cup and a side salad. This plate was $35.00, truly not worth it. They could also work on deveining the shrimp. My husband had a bacon cheese burger with fries. The top of the bun was chard and black but he ate it anyway. As the evening went on the restaurant got fuller and fuller, what COVID 19? By the time we left the restaurant the house was full, social distancing went out the window. This restaurant has a lot of potential and the waitstaff and food are great but unless they have a huge kitchen and a team of chefs they should reduce the amount of items they have on their menu. This will help feature and showcase their best items. You don't have to try so hard, people will come from all around to enjoy good seafood. Work on presentation and...
