We were very hopeful for a good experience with yummy food! I love seafood & like supporting local, independently owned businesses. We stopped for the first time on Saturday, May 15th around 8:30pm. We were traveling, stopped for gas & decided to try Captain's Galley next door. The staff was very friendly & we were seated quickly at that time of the evening. My boys enjoyed the hushpuppies & their chicken strips kids meals for the most part. I ordered a sampler fish platter that included cod, Alaskan whitefish, & Haddock & because I love MahiMahi & was sharing with my husband, I decided to pay $8 to add a piece to our meal. The Cod was & one other tasted fairly hot & fresh, however the MahiMahi was pretty small (2.5 " square) for an $8 per piece price tag and was cold/ lukewarm, chewy, & had very little taste. It was definitely not fresh, nor was the other piece of fried fish. Not one person (server or manager) asked how our food was, or I would have told them directly. (My husband hates conflict & opted to pay the full bill before I could speak to anyone. ) Fast forward 1 week...we had to stop by to pick up my son's cell phone that was forgotten the week before (& which they kindly kept for us) on our return trip. Since we were there we decided to try them again for carryout this time in case the later evening time affected the freshness. This time I ordered the Alaskan Whitefish Po Boy sandwich & onion rings (& kids meals w fries for the boys again). We waited 40 min for our carryout. I reiterated. multiple times that I wanted to make sure the food was hot and fresh, esp when I was asked after 20+ min what side the kids meals wanted. I was assured everything was hot & fresh when it came out. However, it was not. My fish (& onion rings somewhat) tasted like it had been under a heat lamp, and it was a very small piece (less than 1/2 the size of the bun & smaller than the width of 2 of my fingers). One of the chicken tenders also looked more like a nugget. I was very disappointed, but since our quick, to go stop turned into a 40 min wait, we needed to get back on the road to try to get home before midnight. I hope they can work these things out. It is a cute place with a unique selection, but continuing to serve heat lamp chewy food in less than adequate portions is not good for repeat...
Read moreThe place is well known around here, it's a seafood restaurant mostly. I can't recommend this place at all. The food wasn't good at all. There were 5 people total in our party. Each one ordered something different. I had steak tips with gr. Peppers and onions. The steak was very tough. The gr. peppers were not cook completely. The bread was way over cooked. To the point of being hard. The hush puppies are sweet. And some of the other's in the party ordered seafood, chicken, shrimp ravioli and fish. Not one person in the party was satisfied with their meal. My total bill was $98.00 and some change. As I was paying for the meal, I'm not sure our waitress knew that I was standing at the register. She came up to the register and told the one that was ringing up my total, she said to her, table # whatever we were did not leave me a tip. The young lady at the register looked at her and pointed at me. Little did our waitress know that I always leave a tip on the card I pay with. So I get my total of $98.00 then she adk if I wanted to leave a tip, I said sure. She turns the pad around and you have to pick the tip you want and when you pick the tip. You don't get to pick the rating. They pick it for you. You could not leave a tip no less than 15%. I came out of the restaurant and git in the car. I told my wife that I will not come back here ever again. I paid $98.00 and we all left hungry. So all I can say is if you want to try the captain's galley. Go for it, but don't be surprised if you come out the...
Read moreThis is a local place for us so i hope my review will be viewed as honest and forthcoming. We have tried this place a few times and its always just been so so. But we are limited in our county restaurants without having to drive 20 or 30 min so we decided to give CG another try today. Its a cold blustery day so a hot bowl of clam chowder sounded good. We arrived at 4 pm and ordered. I ordered the bowl of clam chowder and the appetizer of scallops wrapped in bacon. When my soup came it was luke warm tettering on cold. I tried to eat it but when my scallops came they were tee tiny wrapped up in burnt bacon. Ridiculous price for such meager portion. I finally asked the waitress to take off the soup and she returned with a smart attitude manager that loudly began to patronize me at the table. I was mortified but i took it and went to cash register. They didnt take the soup off. So again the black haired hateful manager (again ) loudly this time at register talking to me like i did something unthinkable. I offered to pay for half of the soup. She continued to tell me i should have said something earlier. I finally just gave up and and paid. But i WIll not be back. I could have returned as a patron for so so food but when the manager defends serving cold soup on such a cold day and making you feel terrible about it, well they dont need my business. So if your reading this, please take the trip to morristown to captain ds. Captains galley is overpriced, bad customer service and needs...
