Donut Hut — Restaurant in Des Moines

I was on my way to church after picking up a vehicle over at the Des Moines airport and I found myself driving past the church because I had some extra time. In all honesty, I was looking for a cup of coffee. I rolled up to the stop light and on my right hand side I saw this little place called donut hut. It looked like a place where I used to go with my grandpa when I was younger so I decided to stop in instead of stopping into a franchise. As soon as I walked in I knew I was supposed to be here. The service was fantastic!!! The donuts were even better! The one thing that I really enjoyed the most is the conversation I got to have with the owner. How he interacted with the kids and with the customers is so very important. You don't get service like this often. I cannot wait to come back and have more donuts! This is a place that I will frequent often when I come to Des Moines. Much love and lots of...

A cute place with very kind service, unfortunately the donuts were just okay to subpar. We got both cake and yeast donuts and had two that had issues and two that were okay. For some reason the blueberry cake was extra dry and tasted floury. The one that really wasn't good was the strawberry filled. The donut itself was okay, but the filling was oddly bitter and didn't really taste like strawberry, just bitter with a slight sweetness.

Our cinnamon crumb and cinnamon sugar were okay, a little dry, but not nearly as bad as the blueberry. The dryness may have been due to us eating them later in the day. I think the donuts are better than Dunkin or Krispy Kreme, but not as great as other family owned shops I've had. Their prices are great though so we may stop in earlier in the day and try again to see if they're better fresh and try...

My husband and I, on a whim, decided to try Donut Hut on National Donut Day...and boy, are we glad we did! The owner was absolutely lovely, and I'll forever be grateful to him for recommending the pecan roll. I can't stop thinking about it. It was soft and fluffy, with the perfect amount of sweetness. I fell in love instantly.

Meanwhile, my husband, who went straight to work with an apple fritter each for himself and a coworker, had to stop and CALL ME ON THE PHONE to tell me how perfect it was. He confessed that if only he'd tasted it before giving it away, he would have kept the second fritter for himself.

We also tried a rose and a tiger tail - both SO fresh and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
