Review My friend and I stumbled onto Tullpa (really close to Merle Hay Mall) as we were trying to find something we hadn’t eaten in Des Moines and I am so glad we did!
From the moment we stepped in we were welcomed into a beautiful restaurant with a lots of color, great lighting, and some wonderful upbeat music playing.
As this was our first time at Tullpa we didn’t know exactly what to get, but thankfully our waitress had some great recommendations for us.
We asked her to surprise us with an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert.
First, we were brought a delicious dish of crunchy corn pieces with two dipping sauces, one sweet and one spicy, the perfect pre dinner snack.
Next arrived an Acevichada Causa. This was an incredible dish in presentation and taste! This dish is an interesting take on ceviche as it combines the traditional taste of ceviche with a wonderful potato dough patty. What a delicious combo.
Next arrived our first entree, another fish dish, Salmon a la chorillana. Normally, I am not a fan of salmon, but this was far from a normal salmon dish. The salmon fillet arrived in a sweet onion and tomato sauce flavored with different warm spices and a surprising secret ingredient you’ll never guess (you’ll just have to order it to find out what it is)! This dish was the perfect blend of sweet and savory!
Next, a dish I’ve had before (but never this delicious), Lomo Saltado. A traditional Peruvian dish of stir fried beef, onions, and tomato (with a side of rice and fries). The beef was moist and flavorful, the fries had an interesting seasoning that fit perfectly!
Of course we had to try some desert (even though the portions were huge, we made room). We were brought a rice pudding with dates, cinnamon, and an interesting jelly like substance of corn and various spices. Even though it looked unassuming, the flavor was incredible. Not too sweet, a wonderful consistency, and just so unlike any traditional American desserts.
If you are looking to expand your culinary horizons, trying to experience a different cultures food, or simply looking for the perfect spot to take that special someone, I encourage you to give Tullpa a try. I promise you won’t be...
Read moreI recently had the opportunity to dine at Tullpa Peruvian Food located by Merle Hay Mall. Don't let the strip mall location fool you, as the inside ambiance is colorful and welcoming. The staff was friendly and attentive, making for a pleasant dining experience.
The menu at Tullpa Peruvian Food offers a variety of options, including daily specials. I decided to try the chicken aka caldo soup with cilantro bass. The taste and consistency of the soup were good, although it was a bit saltier than my personal preference. It was served with rice and corn, which added a nice texture to the dish. However, I felt that some sort of vehicle or sipping bread would have been a nice addition.
The broth of the soup had a great flavor overall, and it showcased the authentic Peruvian taste. While the outside ambiance of the restaurant may be rated lower at 2.0, the inside ambiance deserves a solid 4.0 rating. So, don't judge the food solely based on the appearance of the restaurant from the outside.
The interior of Tullpa Peruvian Food is neat and clean. One suggestion I have for improvement would be to consider adding curtains or other dividers to help hide the kitchen area and enhance the overall visual appeal of the space.
In summary, my experience at Tullpa Peruvian Food was positive. The restaurant offers a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. The chicken aka caldo soup provided a taste of authentic Peruvian flavors, although it was slightly saltier than desired. Overall, I would recommend giving Tullpa Peruvian Food a try for a taste of Peruvian cuisine in a pleasant dining setting.

Read morePeruvians, don't bother, this is not Peruvian food, one sentence to prove it:
El "Pollo a la brasa" es pollo frito con sal y pimienta y papas de mac Donald's 😅
This restaurant isn't really Peruvian food, if you are missing home and coming here for something familiar you won't find it.
I order 3 dishes and 2 drinks: Pollo a la brasa, Choritos a la chalaca, ceviche, maracuya and chicha morada
The Pollo a la brasa is just fried chicken, no flavour of Pollo a la brasa, just salt pepper, they literally just fried it and called a day, the fries are frozen MacDonald's style fries, it doesn't come with any of the pollo a la brasa sauces, the salad is fine.
The Choritos a la chalaca was everything but that, just weird looking things, the taste was alright but they have so much tomato and onions is hard to taste or fit in the mouth, is just awkward, the Choritos were a bit... It didn't look like a mussle
The ceviche, I had SO MUCH hopes for this one, it was alright, but they put something in it, I don't know if it maybe was..ginger? Because it tasted off, not like ceviche but sushi.
They also did some sort of "tradition" to dip the canchita in sweet and spicy sauce... What?
The chicha morada was awful, I'm sorry it tasted like burn sugar, and the Maracuya is full of seeds, a bit of seed is good, that much makes you be crunching on it for every sip
And so, so expensive
The service lady was nice, only...
