My fiancé's birthday was a week ago, and I surprised him with a dinner here where he first proposed. He was pleased with the surprise, needless to say! One thing he noticed was the change in management from when he proposed to me. After our happy celebration there, he admitted to me on our drive back home however, he only first took me there because he knew the manager "Jean" who had been there since before he was even born would be there; and her attitude would for sure throw me off from his plan to propose. You see, I also work in the hospitality business and whenever I go out, I notice everything from A to Z and usually comment on it up to wazoo filling up his ears with more information than he cares to hear. But for his proposal to me there, he felt that Jean would get my attention, but not in a good way. He knew I would be too distracted by her mean and smug (or just less than friendly) spirit that she has gained quite the reputation for around the whole city to notice something was up with "him!" He was right! I will never forget how distasteful everything she did and said was... from the permanent scowl on her face when she spoke to customers, and even staff. I didn't complain much that night; I just remember telling him how much I felt sorry for her. She was clearly miserable, and set on making everyone in her path even more miserable. But thank God for love... she wasn't able to ruin our night. Before my fiancé proposed, he told me that my compassion is one of the things that made him fall in love with me. He said if I could feel sorry for someone like "Jean" I was a saint, and should be able to put up with the likes of him for the rest of my life... By the time he finished his proposal, everyone cheered. Everyone except Jean of course. We joked about just how permanently her frown had been planted on her face...and why, etc. But overall, that night, his plan worked because her off-ness is what kept me so distracted. When he was ready to pop the question, it took me so off guard. I wasn't ready or even expecting that!
I share all that to say... when I brought him back to the restaurant for another taste/private laugh at the mean mug running the joint for years; but we were both pleasantly surprised by the new restaurant manager we met. She was in a word, "unforgettable" but in the best way possible! She was so genuinely happy that we were celebrating my fiancé's birthday, I told her the whole story... about how he had popped the question to me there years ago, and I was bringing him back for another taste. She just laughed. But her genuineness of spirit is something that made our night there one of the best date nights we ever had! Our waitress was really good and friendly too, AND SO WAS THE FOOD!!!! but even though we had no problems, the tall girl (we forgot her name but he said he believes it starts with A) who manages the restaurant now is everything a store manager should be. Her tone and demeanor is confident, pleasant, and welcoming. We watched her in action just lighting up the whole place. Every person she came in contact with immediately formed a huge smile on their face after being graced with her beautiful presence. It was literally like she was spreading JOY, and making everyone's dining and social outing experience relaxed and top tier. I think her name does start with an A, and it is fitting too; because she is an A+ manager, and made my fiancé's birthday dinner there "A" night we will always smile to remember. I don't know if Jean is gone; but she sure has met her match. They say light casts out darkness, and that is what I hope the tall girl does: Continue to be the bright light that the restaurant needed to show the "old" folks how it's supposed to be done! If I was rich, I would add to this review a free meal for every person in Detroit, just so they could meet her. I think she is hands down the epitome of, as the kids would say, "IF turning a frown upside down" WAS A PERSON... into a forever smile. The world needs more people in...

Read moreMediocrity is the best word to describe the experience of eating at the original Buddy's location. When you first walk in there is this familiar dive bar feel. The same feeling when you visit Loui's Pizza or the original Cloverleaf in Eastpointe. The classic aesthetic has been untouched by time. This feeling IMMEDIATELY goes away when they hand you the menu.
The pizza is great, but I cannot believe how greedy Buddy's has gotten over the years since expanding. Some of these prices for even a 4 slice pizza are insane. Cloverleaf in Eastpointe and Loui's in Hazel Park are doing the exact same thing with the same original recipe that all three of these locations loosely share yet somehow Buddy's is charging nearly 40% more. Yall got greedy and forgot what made you great. A $15 minimum for a small pizza with one topping while Cloverleaf will do the same for $10.25 is robbery and you know it. What makes your product so much better than Loui's and Cloverleaf's that you can charge such an absurd premium? At least Loui's and Cloverleaf still respect what made them so great and respect their customers.
Now you'd think that they'd have the respect to keep the prices lower at their original location, but $6.75 for a pint of the house lager? $17.50 for a 4 piece specialty pizza? Buddy's, what in the ever loving heck has happened to you? When did you start to hate your customers and the community so much that you have to rip us off just to enjoy the classic recipe? if you are reading this review, go to Cloverleaf in Eastpointe. Don't waste your time with this greedy shell of a once great...
