When one considers the Mexican food scene of Detroit, their mind probably goes immediately to "Mexicantown", the district of restaurants and shops bookended by the area around Vernor and Bagley near I-75. While it's easy to find decent Mexican food in that area, it could be argued (at the risk of sounding elitist) that the food in the—let's face it—touristy part of town is not necessarily perfectly authentic in the "My Mexican Aunt makes this at home" kind of way.
That's where places like Señor Lopez come in.
Detroit has a huge Mexican community, and they also eat at Mexican restaurants but definitely demand more nuance than your average Americanized Mexican array of standards. They know that Mexico is a huge country with a wide variety of subcultures and regions, and they want food from their state, their home town, their village.
Señor Lopez features specialties from the Yucatan and Hidalgo state, such as cochinita pibil, chiles en nogada, and pollo entomatado. They also have an awesome breakfast menu featuring astounding chilaquiles, huevos con nopales, and omelettes.
You can come here and explore more sophisticated Mexican cuisine, but they still have excellent standards and favorites that will be familiar to anyone who grew up in America. The menu is worth exploring with multiple visits.
Excellent service, a well rounded drink menu, low prices, ample parking, and a unique menu in a homogenized field all adds up to an excellent restaurant and one of my favorites...
Read moreSenor Lopez was just okay. It was around 9:40pm Sunday night and all my favorite Mexican restaurants had already closed. I saw that they were open, checked out their menu & decided I’d give them a shot! I ordered a grilled chicken taco salad. I asked the young lady who was working what all came on the salad because the menu didn’t list all ingredients. She said lettuce, tomato, cucumber, cheese, sour cream, “all the regular salad toppings.” I was fine with that. My order was ready pretty quickly. To my surprise, the salad included beans, rice, avocado, onions & yellow peppers. I don’t consider those items “regular salad toppings”, so I wish she’d been a bit more informed about their menu. However, they were honestly the best thing about my meal! All of the toppings were very fresh EXCEPT the chicken! I found myself searching through the salad to find forkfuls of veggies, rice & beans without the dried out, hard, bland chicken pieces. It seemed like this chicken was prepared at 10am & had sat out all day. Not tasty AT ALL. I wish I had just ordered the salad with NO meat! Due to the chicken alone, I will not return to...
Read moreVery bad experience, would not recommend. Maybe their service and quality is worse with COVID, I just don't understand the positive reviews.
We ordered takeout- enchiladas verdes, the combination plate, chips and guac, and flan, all vegetarian. The enchiladas themselves were actually good. The burrito on the combination plate, which we asked to be filled with beans, came with chicken. The enchiladas had basically no sauce on them, and the tacos were filled with limp green beans and avocado that was brown (pictured). The rice that came with both entrees was old and dried out, clearly not made today. The guacamole appetizer was not bright green but slightly brown, also not made today. Serving old, unfresh avocado and rice only made me question the freshness of the emchiladas verdes. The flan tasted good, but again who knows how old that was.
BUT. What made all of this more disappointing was that we were told the wait would be 30-35 minutes, when in reality it took over an hour for us to get our food. If they weren't even making the food fresh what was taking so long??
Some of the employees inside weren't wearing...
