Small town feel with a big time flavor!
On a cross country drive from California to Quitman, TX, we stumbled upon the friendly little town of Dumas. We needed gas, so we decided to grab some food as well. I love beer and pizza, so we stopped by Toppled Turtle for both.
First let me start if by saying the bartender was awesome. He was beyond friendly, made easy conversation, and just oozed a general likability. Seated at the bar was an older gentleman that also struck up a conversation with me, telling me all the wonderful benefits of moving to Dumas.
The bartender suggested an IPA and then directed me to the opposite side of the building. Topples Turtle Pizza was their sister business. Both businesses shared a common hallway, restrooms, and patio.
The patio was huge. It had a place for a band to play, tables with televisions, oversized games for kids, and more.
We ordered a half and half pizza that was made and delivered before I finished my first beer. We were halfway through eating it before noticing that they forgot to add chicken to the pizza. My gal went in to see about being refunded the price of the add on only to receive an entirely new pizza free of charge! Did I ke ruin it had fresh basil? Like fresh from an outdoor gardening pot in the patio? Delicious!
I ended up having a second beer to wash down the extra pizza and grabbing a crowler to go.
Everything was very affordable. I was actually shocked at how low my beer tab was, considering I come from a state that taxes you for paying taxes.
Great place! I wished we were staying the night so I could’ve experienced the patio lit up with love music. Who knew I’d love a place so much, I’d be making sure to drive the same route on my next family visit to assure I get to experience this...
Read moreI took my wife here, since it was her birthday. When we arrived, the worker was playing on her phone. She didn't say a word as we looked around for a table to drop our jackets. More than half the tables needed clean, yet they were all empty. If the workers can't keep the empty lobby clean, how can we trust they will keep the kitchen we don't get to see clean? Not wanting to just leave without an explanation, my wife explained to the worker that she should probably clean tables instead of sit and goof off on her phone. Another worker came out from the kitchen to see what was going on. When she heard we were upset due to the dirty dining area, she simply said, 'okay, have a good day then.' Zero apologies, zero worry about the lack of customers. Not a customer in the place, yet when we visited a different restaurant across town, the place was packed. The owner needs to work with the staff on customer service and cleanliness.
Owners note: not sure if you were reviewing the right place?
My note: Yes, I most definitely know where I was and how your staff acted. You must be the manager who came in we mentioned our irritation at the state of disrepair and lack of care. That person didn't care about customer service, so no wonder the staff plays on their phones with the entire place dirty with zero customers. The locals might not have a choice, but travelers like us do. I would recommend the diner in town with the Boxing Bull out front over your restaurant to...
Read moreReally wonderful atmosphere. Loved all the turtle art. This will be a family favorite just for how comfy and fun it is. Lots of comfy, flexible seating areas. Big picnic tables and then a couch area, and also metal tables and chairs. Also a very nice outdoor area.
Two seating areas the bar area was far more comfortable and had lots of board games and a kids play corner. There are two cats in residence in this area too, but they were very aloof. I think pets were allowed in this area too? There were lots of signs saying no pets in the restaurant area. Hallway to the bathroom divides the bar/dining area from the restaurant/dining area, but you could seat in either area.
Order and pay at counter and they deliver to you table side. Food came out VERY fast. I was surprised.
Pizza was amazing, and I loved the churched up cheesy bread. Really very good oven pizza and lots of custom options and unique flavors.
I only took on star off the food because the salad I had was not so great. It needed more variety and I think the balsamic dressing was just the vinegar. Also the spaghetti wasn’t very good at all.
I can’t rate the alcohol and brewery at all as we don’t drink, but I was delighted that the brewery smell wasn’t overpowering and that is was the kind of bar where not partaking was just fine.
All in all a great family eating spot and they serve coffee and pastries during the day. Wonderful place to go and we...
