The young lady who took our order (two Greek salads) was professional, smiling, and warm. Everything was A-OK. It was as we waited for that order; and waited, and waited, that the experience gradually deteriorated. For the record, it was only one other couple and ourselves awaiting our order. It was 6:30 PM on a Sunday evening and the place was neither crowded nor busy. The person who prepares orders was not —— preparing orders. Nor was she making any eye contact or volunteering any information on why there was a delay and when we could expect to be served. Instead, she was doing a wonderful impression of someone who hates being where she is and counting the seconds until her shift ends. She was painful to watch. A brief interaction that we witnessed between her and her supervisor confirmed that she, too, would be glad to be elsewhere. So, despite having paid for our order and wasted substantial time waiting for it, we walked out of Panera and got a burger at the McDonalds just down the road. I am very happy to be able to say that the staff at this Panera location are not only professional and quick, but as my family learned recently they are also genuinely good people as well. We were devastated by a sudden loss of our father, and after leaving the hospital we had to take my mother somewhere to eat, because she had been by his side all day and needed something to keep her going. Without us saying anything, the staff at Panera clearly realized something had happened and we were treated so kindly by everyone we encountered during our visit. I am so grateful for their sensitivity on what was so far the most difficult day of our lives. And it may seem silly to be so focused on a trip to a bakery with everything that's happened, but little things like that can make such a monumental difference just when they're needed, and simply being a good person can leave such a strong impression on people who need a little kindness.
