San Jose Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Elgin

I visited this restaurant with my family over the holidays. We had 9 people in our party. We were immediately told we had to wait 25 minutes for a table in a place that was almost empty. The staff acted like it was going to be difficult to put tables together but when a white family with 9 people came in after us they were seated immediately with no problem. They asked us if we wanted two tables across from each other and we said no we would like to sit together. None of the wait staff wanted to serve us. After 2 tables were put together for us that we stared at from the moment we arrived we finally were able to be served. Upon leaving we noticed another white family with 9 people seated immediately with 2 tables that were empty when we arrived but we were not offered those tables. This San Jose is by far the best texmex in the area. I'd give them 3.5 stars because they aren't quite up to a four. But I like them and eat here often. If they would try just a little harder they could easily sweep the texmex niche in NE Columbia.

Two years have passed since my first review. San Jose is easily up to 4 stars now. They have become my favorite TexMex in the Columbia area. The Chilies Rejenos are fresh and the best. Street tacos are wonderful, as are the burritos especiales. The chunky guacamole is great, just like the house margarita (not frozen). If you you're really hungry try the Paradilla's, they'll knock your socks off. Oh, they may be crowded... I hesitated to write this review for selfish reasons... I don't want them to...

This place is awesome!!!! Stopped by on the way to Wilmington NC. First of all, the staff was amazing! Friendly and welcoming! Food was great! Seriously the best Mexican food I have ever had! Margherita the best ever! Not too tart, not too sweet, really perfect! Creamy, if you can imagine. Don't know what their secret is but I would love to have the recipe! But he wouldn't give it up!
